For me, the upcoming bout between these two legends is not far from a mis-match. I honestly do think Jones has found his form again. Obviously he wont have that dazzling speed which he had March 1, 2003, due to the fact that his speed and reflexes aged prematurely (because of losing that 25 pounds of muscle), but i honestly do think he still has 70% of that hand speed. However, if hes not in good shape (which is not likely; hes always been in good shape IMO) he may not be able to use that for the full 12, giving Tito a big chance. But i think the chances of that are slim. Tito has had 2 and a bit years off. Whether he's been keeping himself fit and healthy, i don't know, but he seemed a little bloated and chubby 1-2 weeks ago. Roy looked in great shape, and hes been using, what looks like, a great training schedule. Tito last faught against Winky Wright in 2005. One has to say he looked awful, far from the Tito we all used to know (and love, in some cases). I think the non-activity and weight dis-advantage will lose tito this fight, in the Fifth Round. In a nutshell, Roy is bigger, heavier, stronger, and for me, quicker. If he uses this to his full potential, should he be in good shape, he'll be walking out of the garden with 39 KO's. I'll be looking forward to a Roy Jones V Joe Calzaghe match-up, late 2008. Supermiddle weight champions - Past and Present Sounds good, right?? :nut K
I appreciate your enthusiasm, but Jones is shot. A fight with Calzaghe would be a slaughter, Jones could get seriously hurt.
I beleive it. I still think his 70% is better than most fighters out there today. And if he beats Tito easily, he should get JC at the end of the year.
Sounds like this was written by a promoter. Anyway, I'm sure Roy would like a fight with Joe because it would be worth a lot of money to him. Personally I think it would be pointless now as Roy is past his best. They should have fought five years ago.
RJJ's been done for years. And Trinidad has been done for even longer. This is show business, not boxing.
What old self? The RJ alter ego? Wasn't he back to his self when he fought Tarver the 3rd time? At any rate, whether he is back or not, this fight is and will always been a mismatch at whatever era it is fought. Tito has no chance.
Wow, this is the thread of illusion, delusion, and wishful thinking. The only thing still intact about Jones is his incredible ego. If a fighter is confident, why would he choose to fight an obviously washed up opponent 23 pounds over his best weight, and about 10 years past his best performance ? Now , according to some here, off of a worthless victory over Trinidad , Jones beats Calzaghe and Hopkins? Maybe if Roy goes on another Steroid cycle, but possibly that even wouldn't help.
People said the same thing about Foreman a few times..and those few times he won a championship..again To assume Jones is shot is maddeningly stupid Alot of "once" great fighters make serious combacks Mosley Tszyu Foreman Ali (once) and soon Taylor and Kessler will come back after being down It's like riding a bike you don't forget and as long as Jones still has the tools which he does there should be only light skepticism..maybe for his stamina. He's got the speed, agility, power and he'll never lose the intelligence
Jones gets hit with a lot more flush shots than he did in his prime. Plus, his chin ain't the best- and it's only getting weaker the older he gets. He's fried. Tarver kicked his ass three times. How much more proof do you need.
