Former opponent of Bute:Six months after, I was still hurting from that body punch

With Bute, he was able to hit me and hurt me. He hurt me, he hurt.

That one shot early, which round….
First! La premiere! I didn’t even see it man. I was hurt bad, I could have quit right there. I could have quit there. The guy’s punches were coming from everywhere, all angles. I was like, I’m not going to get screwed up tonight. My career’s not going to end tonight. I knew I was in trouble with Bute, I knew he must have been something special when he took the fight with nine fights. I was in camp thinking something is up with this guy taking this fight with nine or ten fights. I was apprehensive about the fight because of that.


I remember you describing that punch as the hardest you’ve been hit.
I’ve never been hurt like that in my life. In sparring, in a fight, I’ve been rocked before in fights, but this guy actually hurt me for I’d say, six months after the fight. I was still hurting from that body punch, he caught me in the sternum and that was bruised for about six months. I was hurt. For a long time. As a professional fighter, as an amateur and a pro, he’s the only one guy who’s ever just kicked my ass.


Did you figure that at that time with just ten fights that this guy was destined?
I knew. I knew it right there. This guy was special. I knew it, I’ve seen a few lefthanders, not many, but I’ve fought good lefthanders. I fought O’Neil Bell, he’s a switcher, even Berrio, he’s a switcher. He can pop from both sides. I fought Orlando Anderson in the amateurs; he’s a good lefthander too. I fought some good southpaws, but this guy (Laughing), he was just finely tuned. He was groomed for this moment.


What do you see as his strengths in the ring and what do you see winning him the fight?
He’s an intelligent fighter. He’s a guy that if you catch him something, if he makes a mistake, you better make him pay for it right then and there because he’s not going to make that same mistake again. He’s a very smart thinking fighter. Very intelligent. I mean if I catch him with something in training, I can forget about it, not for this camp, next time too. I can just forget about it. I have to conjure up something else to try and work on him. I’ve never worked with anybody like this before. This guy eats, sleeps, speaks, dreams boxing. This is what he does, this is his life. When I was at home training for this guy, I told my conditioning coach I was fighting some Romanian guy, Lucian Boot, I couldn’t even pronounce his name. He told me I better train hard because he told me I was fighting just to put gas in my truck; this guy is fighting to survive. That’s his mentality, all or nothing. This guy is willing to die in that ring.


People who are wondering about Lucian’s chin and whether it’s questionable, the guy can take a punch! He’s like any other fighter though, any guy can get knocked out, but the guy can take a punch. Seriously.
