Wladimir would've knocked out Gerry "Crazylegs" Cooney sooner & better than Holmes did.

Tyson Furry is the Gerry Cooney of our day.

Back when boxing was only popular among black american athletes, he got to much undeserved hype for being white.

People say that but you have to remember Cooney was from New York the media capital of the World and a lot of New York fighters are hyped both Black and White. Plus he was knocking everyone out with brutal and exciting KO's in what was at the time a very thin and boring Heavyweight Division. Again, not saying being White didn't help because it certainly did but that is not the sole reason or the whole story. :good

You have absolutely no idea what you're talking about and I would wager you've never seen a Cooney fight. In fact, you've probably never seen a Fury fight and are basing everything you say on the fact they both have Irish ancestry.

Agreed! As you so correctly point out, Cooney got all the hype for three basic reasons:

    1. He was from New York

    2. He was knocking people out; and, yes.....

    3. He was white

The sad part is, I think he could have had a much better career had he been brought along more slowly. He basically went knocking out washed up contenders like Ron Lyle, Jimmy Young and the glass-jawed Ken Norton to fighting Holmes. He should have had an intermediary step at least. At the time I thought a fight with Mike Weaver for the WBA title would have been perfect, and there was some talk of this - but apparently his handlers wanted to cash out against Holmes.

huh?? Dude I saw every Cooney fight I came accros. He is an overrated fighter. He didnt have a good jab or a good right hand, his only good punch was his hook.

tyson Fury is an overhyped bum. I cant stand that pikey pudding. I hope Chisora KOs his ass.

People are too harsh on Cooney. He never reached his potential and to me the most criminal factor was his management letting him sit on the shelf for 13 months before the Holmes fight. Cooney brought excitement to the division at the time he was brutally KOing just about everyone he fought. You are right Cooney could have had a better career he was just not developed properly. I still remember what he did to Norton that is as brutal of a KO as you will ever see.

What Cooney fights have you watched and what Fury fights have you watched?(if you knew anything about him you'd know it's Fury not Furry)

Cooney was coming up right when I was first getting into boxing, and I said all this stuff at the time. During that 13 month spell was when many of us were saying he should fight Weaver.

This made a lot of sense from a financial standpoint too as Cooney could have picked up a belt and demanded more for the Holmes fight - while getting valuable experience against a quality fight he could have beaten.

Like many in this sport, sadly, his handlers wanted to go for the sure money, rather than risk a Duane Bobick-type situation.
