I made a big fuss about the exact same thing, literally word for word as you said. Craziness. The things he said tonight were so "Uh, why the **** should you have anything to say about that?" HBO and Showtime have both been screwing up on a weekly basis. I really like Tarver, Max, Tessitore, and Bernstein. I don't care too much for any other commentators. I hate Merchant and slowly, Roy is entering alongside him. And I gave Williams 4 rounds, just to throw that out there.
The only person I really hate is Larry Merchant, I mean sometimes he seems like he's the only one with balls to ask questions of fighters. But the man is so bitter and he thinks the only style of Boxing should be all out brawling. As for Roy, he's alright. The only bit that annoyed me was him telling people to retire but his commentating isn't too bad. Tarver is the best though. I always say I learn more watching Showtime than I do HBO.
These boxers who do announcing say some nutty stuff sometimes...but I do like their insight. I liked Lennox, but I prefer RJJ and Tarver. I didn't like Foreman, as he always sounded a little dim.
To be fair Roy has never really taken a twelve round beating apart from the Johnson fight and maybe the Calzaghe fight. He actually looked pretty good against Lebedev until the knockout in the final ten seconds.
yeah but roy was still right about paul needing to retire and geting hit with the left hand over and over.needing a new trainer etc etc.roy is spot on with his commentating on the sport of boxing.
I think this is a bull**** thread, really. Just because Roy doesn't apply the same logic on himself that he applied on Williams, doesn't mean that what he said was any less true. I understand that against the background of his own recent career moves, you can say that it makes him sound like a hypocrite. But he's supposed to be there as a commentator, not as a fighter, and as a COMMENTATOR all of his COMMENTS were on the mark. I thought he did an excellent job. Edit: i just saw that the guy above me commented almost the exact same thing as me, i hadn't seen that, excuse me.
I was also thinking that Roy should take his own advice and retire. On the other hand I thought he was spot on last night. I love it when a commentator shows passion in any sport. I felt that from Roy last night.
I'll be so happy when Merchant goes away for good. He's just a bitter old man. I thought Roy Jones was EXCELLENT last night. He provides insight and I can understand what he's saying. I don't understand all of the Max Kellerman hate. The guy is a true fan and professional. Sure, he might have his own quirky style, but that's just his personality. You can't deny that the guy is very knowledgeable. I'm surprised at how much I like the Bob Papa, Max Kellerman, Roy Jones combination. I think they are a good fit.
Hard to argue with you. Really wish Roy would move on before he gets even more seriously knocked around. It's all downhill from hereon for him and he's the only one that can't see that.
roy actually cares about the game and it comes across in his commentary, he's not the problem with HBO right now
I never said that what Roy was saying was incorrect. Simply that it was foolish coming from his mouth. If someone has a drinking problem and continues to drink, they probably should go to aa and tell the people they need to quit drinking. Of course they both need to quit drinking. One just shouldn't judg the other
look i understand where your coming from, but again he's there as a commentator and as such he did a good job. First he catches a lot of heat because he talks about himself too much when he's commentating, and now he makes a neutral, objective observation like a commentator is supposed to and gets criticized for that? I don't think that's right, that's just my opinion.
