In all likelihood between RJJ and PBF, it is highly inappropriate to consider images of coexistence because Floyd picked Roy's style where he left off - dominant in ring generalship n boxing I.Q., mostly skilled to counter with flashy shots, extremelly risk averse - b'sides Roy moved from 160 upwards and Floyd fought at 154 only once to make it harder... I do feel that Mayweather is the greatest defensive fighter of all time along with Willie Pep, Pernell Whitaker, Muhammad Ali and Wilfred Benitez and Roy had the better combination of power-shooting and lightnin handspeed in history with the two Sugar Rays and Ali. By modern day standards, defense still gets the better of other assets and Mayweather would do more than compete.

If anyone thinks Floyd frustrates Roy w/defense they are on crack !!

Watch his fight with Toney I'd like to say Toney and Floyd have similar defenses as where they are both hard to hit and bend at the waist to make opponents miss ..Roy would have lit Floyd up !

 

Toney, with all the defensive likelihood to Mayweather, had to play the stalker role against Roy and could never counter or play reactive punching. Defensively, Roy used his punching power and leg movement to step in and stay out of range - his shoulder rolling defense against the ropes worked against the likes of Paz and some others but was never that great by itself... Roy would have to come forward and try to catch Floyd, leaving his defense aside whereas Floyd would have to do his usual routine and from where he is most comfortable at. Furthermore, Floyd is consistent in the way he fights and Roy's activity is much more chaotic... Of course, nothing of this means Roy wouldn't have a bigger chance to beat Mayweather than most of welters and super-welters have nowadays.

 

I hadn't seen that fight in years.:good PBF at 130 was something special the best 130 pounder of all time IMO. His hand speed, reflexes and power were amazing.
I'd give RJJ the slight edge in speed but to say Roy was way faster than PBF is insane.

 

RJJ fought something like fifteen past, future or current World Champions in his career before the Tarver fights and it was against that level of fighter that he barely lost a round.

He got slammed for his competition level but it was certainly higher than Kessler's.

He shut down ATGs / P4P top-ten guys (Toney, Hopkins, Hill) in his prime.

 

I like Roy, he was an extraordinary athlete, with great speed and reflexes. However, the same can be said about Floyd. If you want to say Roy is faster, I have no problem with that. However, if you try to present it like Floyd isn't even in Roy's class when it comes to speed, I'll have to strongly disagree.

 

I hate to say it, but don't overrate Ali. Ali was neither one of the elite defensive fighters of all time(though very crafty) or the elite power shooters of all time. Handspeed, yes.

 

Sweet Pea, Ali had an extraordinary sense of distance and would evade shots with that smooth mobility and short head movement ( floating like a butterfly) - he won that fight with Liston based on that and flashy combination punching ( stinging like a bee), then if you consider how he made Foreman punch himself out in Zaire, it surely makes him as one of the greatest defensive fighters of all time. Nonetheless, I agree that I went a little bit too far for calling him as an elite power lightnin shooter but if you go deep into fights like against Archie Moore 1962 or vs Cleveland Williams 1966, you'll get to know why I tended to state that - I take it back though cuz you corrected me appropriately.

 

I just think with Roy's hand speed he'd have no problem catching MW..I mean if Oscar Judah and Hatton were able to catch Floyd at times Roy should have no problems at least a prime Roy ..

 

I think they would both dance around each other making sure neither of them really got hit, it would be called a draw, they would go back to the locker room and suck each others cocks, then HBO would proclaim them both to be the living incarnations of boxing greatness, and then they would both go around loudly and endlessly proclaiming the same at each and every opportunity. In other words, not much different then what we already have from both these guys: pure bs.

I have a problem here.....Mayweather has the better 'technical' defence obviously, but he's been in closer fights than Roy, taken more shots than Roy and seems to be easier to hit than Roy. Whatever Roy did, even though it was unorthodox it worked just as well as what Mayweather does. I'll give them both a 9.

End result - Jones is a greater fighter, by a considerable margin.
