If you want to learn MMA, learn how to wrestle. Jiu Jitsu has always been the shortcut to learning how to grapple.

If you want to learn how to knock someone out, learn to box.

MMA as it prepares you for a whole host of situations in a real fight. Put it this way Alistair overeem would kill wlad in a street fight.

Obviously, mma is a far better form of self defense. There is no hugging and breaks in a bar fight, and when your life is on the line, you need to be prepared to do anything because the person you're fighting is probably prepared to do the same. Boxing is a far more refined and brutal sport however, but only a sport.

Personally, for what it's worth, I would try and find a good combat ji-jit-su school. I'm not talking about sport jj, but combat jj. There are no points, and anything goes. You'll learn joint manipulation, pressure points and attacks to the eyes, groin, throat, and all vital areas. A good combat jj man is well rounded in a lot of different forms of martial arts, including boxing, bjj, judo, wrestling, karate, kendo, etc. When I trained, we had one class a week, because we needed the whole weel to recover. In my school, nothing was on the books or written down sort of thing. We trained in my sensei's basement using weapons from the hardware store. you know, like ice scrapers, pens, stuff like that. We always said if a guy hits you in the head with a bottle during a fight, that was good technique...anything to survive.

Our motto was you don't punch a man when he's down...you kick him, it's easier!

yea, some times wrestling can look a bit gay, but kicking the guys heads and braking ribs is definitely manly

was the question which is the better sport to WATCH or which martial art would be best to defend yourself? I would prefer to watch boxing any day or night over today's mma and UFC. But I'd hate to be facing multiple attackers and only know how to box.

To be a little more specific, today's mma is kind of its own form of martial art. It's more of a sport, like sport jj. No 'soccer kicks' or knees when a guy is down. Try taking a point away from a dude in a bar fight after he kicks you in the head, or say you're the winner of a fight because a guy kicks you in the balls and he should be disqualified LOL. Actually, you might escape with no more harm because the guy would be laughing too hard to punish you further.

My art will always be Combat jj, but my sport will always be boxing

again, are you talking about watching or participating and surviving on the street? I'd fight 'gay' two way to Sunday if it meant not getting killed or seriously maimed.

DFon't get me wrong though. We always tried to avoid fighting, even when i worked the door. Someone would call me a c**ksucker, and i would say 'sure, just buy me some wine next time, but ya gotta leave now'. If they left without a struggle, or as not a bouncer, they left ya alone, great. If not, and they force you to fight, you do whatever you can to make sure even their own mother won't be able to identify the body
