So which aspect of his game looked shopworn to you in his recent career best performances? Compared to his blistering former heights, where he knocked out the staggeringly incompetent and shakey chinned Rey Beutista with a couple of big shots.

I'm trying to find the Broner fight now but I can only see the 10th round but it is fairly indicative of what I think and have been talking about. What jbap sees as refinement and patience I see as a fighter being circumspect....circumspect in the sense that he is having to think about what he's doing...circumspect isn't good. He is consistantly being beaten to the punch, and when he does unload he is falling way short because he is having to think about what he's doing. When I say "shopworn" its not an insult, he's not shot or gunshy I simply mean past prime, his best days are behind him. Gamboa will tell us all we need to know....As a sign of respect to jbaps excellent post(s) I will properly reserve my judgement until then. :thumbsup

Being circumspect has made him a better boxer though. All he used to do is wade in and throw wild punches. And he's hardly cautious, he's still a very aggressive fighter. He's just boxing a lot smarter and picking his spots rather than blowing his load, the guys he's facing now are better and deserve more respect. Broner for example is a good fighter, not great but physically gifted and would have been PDL's best win had he got the decision he deserved. Broner is going to beat you to the punch occasionally, he's a lot faster than PDL, yet PDL boxed well enough with his new style to deserve a win, that tells me he's a far more rounded fighter. You can't go in there and just throw wild punches against everyone, thats why he got sparked in a round against Lopez whereas now he'd do a better job.

Judging him based on Gamboa isn't going to be a fair reflection, Gamboa is special. He'll **** him most likely.

He's been beaten to the punch consistently throughout his career though, that's being extremely slow of hand, not being pedestrian or anything else. That's the thing, his work is more thoughtful, but never being the smartest fighter, he's obviously not going to warp into some kind of Mayweather-hybrid. Rather than acting on impulse like he used to, he's more methodical, and as a result should be undefeated since his comeback, despite fighting at super-feather for god knows whatever reason. It's indicative of his success, it's no fluke that he's now having the most impressive all-round performances of his career now, because he's so much more well-rounded and adept at fighting the smarter fight.

The Gamboa bout will tell us nothing however, as he will in all likelihood be obliterated, as he was never on Yuriorkis' level in the first place. What he will do is give a better account of himself now than he otherwise would have before, because he won't go out wild and swinging for the fences, because that would be playing into his adversaries hands. If anything, as a result of the sustained beating he's likely to recieve he will become shopworn.

He only has to do better than one round to show he's a smarter and more effective fighter than he used to be as Gamboa would spark him in 1 round just as Lopez did ;)

Thats going to a massacre really. Gamboa is far, far too quick for him. The speed and power of Gamboa is going to destroy him very quickly.

Well, Gamboa's a completely different monster to Juanma though, and would've always disposed of that version of the PonceMan in similar, probably even more brutal fashion than Lopez if that's possible. I'm not talking directly comparative to his Lopez escapade, just saying we will see something less painful on the eyes than we otherwise would have a few years ago is all.

Scott Harrison went to America early doors and fought clinics beating Harris Patterson and Boom Boom. Billy was part of that team and ******(I think although Maloney was manager).

If team Burns are confident, and the money right, I think theyd go, but tbh Broners not a name in the US that would sell out Vegas/NY or Atlantic City, so with Burns as the champion, and the draw this side of the pond, makes more sense in my very limited promotional opinion to make this the main event at the best venue in Scotland.

I havent seen much of Broner but the one fight I did, he reminded me of a mini Jeff Lacy for some reason.

Broner's last fight was in Mexico ffs. He's not a draw, this would be a co-main event on HBO if they approved it but if not then it makes sense to have it over here.
