Who was least intimidated by fighting bigger guys?

    Wanderlei Silva...

A career 205lbs fighter who can now make 185lbs, has fought heavyweights Crocop, Hunt and Fujita, as well as big guys like Yvel, Arona, Ortiz, and Rampage.

    BJ Penn...

A career 155lbs fighter, has fought the biggest and best welterweights like GSP, Hughes and Fitch, as well as lightheavy Lyoto Machida in a heavyweight fight.

    Kazushi Sakuraba...

A guy who spent most of his career at 205lbs despite regularly weighing around 180-185lbs, has fought heavyweights like Kimo Leopoldo and Crocop, as well as bigger men like Belfort, Vovchanchyn, Rampage, Randleman, L'il Nog, and Arona.

    Dan Henderson...

A guy who spent his career going between 185 and 205, has fought heavyweight Big Nog and will tonight fight heavyweight Fedor, and has fought many other bigger men like Yvel, Arona, L'il Nog, and Rampage.

There are many other possible suggestions, like Fedor, Vovchanchyn and Couture who all had many fights against much larger heavyweights.

Who best exemplifies the "fight anyone anywhere" disregard for size disadvantages? :bbb

Fedor too. Both have had that same nonchalant unemotional blank stare when facing the best opposition.

    true :thumbsup

I think Fedor basically looked at it "they maybe bigger but I'm faster."

Good shout. Minowa fought a ton of big dudes. Although he let his intimidation show when he fought Baroni. Those two hated each other.

Penn is the only acceptable answer because nothing rivals a natural LW fighting an elite 205er for the big balls award. He also said that he wanted to fight Tim Sylvia at one point and with Penn I think that might have been more than hyperbole.

Sakuraba gave away 60lbs to Kimo Leopoldo in Saku's pro debut.

You don't think that even rivals Penn fighting Machida?

A comment is irrelevant if nothing happened about it. Let's stick to reality.

No, I don't think that rivals Penn for two reasons. A natural 185er is closer in strength to a fat HW than a disgustingly bloated LW is to a 205er and secondly, Kimo wasn't very good and Machida, even when he was green, is an outstanding fighter.

Not to say that Sakuraba wasn't ballsy because he's a legend for taking such obviously shitty match-ups for himself but Penn is just a notch above that.

And the snarky comment about the Penn anecdote was uncalled for because I wasn't saying that an offhand comment should be evidence that Penn has the biggest balls. I was simply using the remark to illustrate Penn's mindset.

I'm a Penn fan, but I don't think the issue is so clear-cut that it can be dismissed as easily as you did. Penn-Machida was one fight and Penn-Sylvia was no fight, I don't think this is sufficient evidence to place Penn well clear of guys like Saku, hence my indignance. I think the subject deserves much more consideration and discussion.

    Sakuraba by a mile

    Rampage
    Igor
    Randleman
    Cro Cop
    Wandy
    Belfort
    Lil Nog
    Manhoef

Im sure I have forgotten someone. But that's more impressive than fighting Lyoto, even if the size disparity between some of those guys and Saku wasnt as great as BJ & Machida

Well, when you look at what a tall order Machida was and how crazy it was that BJ literally ate his way to HW to fight him and then factor in the other matches you talked about, GSP, Fitch, Hughes 3x, Renzo at 185 I think it's a clear cut for BJ.

Compare Penn to Pac. If Pac took on boxing's equivalent of Penn/Machida he'd be fighting Rakhim Chakhkiev at cruiser. Isn't that an absurd match-up? So was Penn/Machida and he made it a good scrap. As well as you've argued for all of the guys in your list, I just can't see anything impressing me more than Penn's overall record of taking challenges.

i noticed the war going on with you on the board without paying too much attention about it MetalMandible. How the hell do you manage to get into huge arguements in every single thread?

This one actually isn't a huge argument but the others were because I made a thread informing this community about Glass Jaws in MMA and the centrality of punch resistance to sports involving punching and ever since I've been treated as a pariah for giving my opinion on anything. Doesn't dissuade me, however!:nut
