I've lurked around and read time to time on the training forum; its been about 2-3 months since I've been involved with boxing. I want to get back; but work and school will limit the time I desire to train. So I'm trying to wake up at 6 AM every morning, and try to beat my 2.5 mile time (11:30 minutes) each day just to be in training shape. But going back to something I read on here; I read that it is not good to telegraph your punches. What does that exactly mean? Is it a serious habit thats hard to get rid of? My technique is awful, I only had a week of boxing training and dropped it because I had finals, so I'm very raw. My point of emphasis is not to develop bad habits, I just want to do things right and practice smarter. Thanks for reading.
All it means is giving your opponent a sign of what you intend to do. You might have heard that the left hook is the most telegraphed punch. This is because you need to do a wind-up before the punch and your opponent can see it from a mile off. Some punches are just structured in such a way that they are more telegraphed than others: the hook as opposed to a jab. But obviously the best way to not show your opponent what you're about to do is by moving quickly and unpredictably, by feinting and moving around a lot. And practice. The more you have the technique for a punch down, the faster you can throw it.
The way I understand it telegraphing a punch means you show with your body what kind of punch your going to throw, like moving your right hand back too slow before throwing it, oponent can figure out what body movement you do before throwing certain shots and thus have more time to counter or block those shots.
I'm going to school for Exercise Science; they make us take Aerobic Conditioning courses. In these courses, we're required to do the 2.5 mile test. Basically run 6 laps out in an outdoor track or 12 laps in a small indoor track. The 70% percentile and requirement for men is 10 minutes and 45 seconds. For women its around 12 minutes. We preformed the test twice, in the beginning of the sesmester and at the end. The first time I got 11:15, second time I got 10:44. Its not really hard, I believe you're very capable of passing this test if you're well conditioned and you have a nice meal 2 hours before(man, that banana saved me) Now, with Christmas/New Years I totally ignored my diet and consumed more liquor and zero water. So my normal time for the 2.5 is around 11:30, so I'm just getting back to normal before school starts again. I like the idea of doing 5 miles...I read Rentless' thread, thats really impressive; my staminia could use improvement. Hey guys, thanks for the reply. I'll go back working to the basics or checking out other threads in this section, really appreciate this training section in the forum.
Yeah, basically all your doing when you telegraph punches is give small hints of body movements to what punches you are going to be throwing. It's impossible to completely hide what punches your going to throw. The more experienced you get the more your able to hide it. It just thats time and practice.
