http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=_iemSk2jrI4 Am I missing something here? How can anyone even believe that Deontay Wilder will be the next great American Heavyweight. Granted, he isn't going full out on this little guy, but the little man was completely outboxing him. This absolutely should not happen if you have enough skill. Deontay Wilder's opponents up until now have been less than tomato cans. He needs a lot of work and in fact should not be stepping up the quality of his opponents, but in fact should stay in the gym for a year and learn the basics of boxing and then come back better than ever! There is no need to rush this kid!
He's obviously not even trying. Even the uploader mentions in the description: "Deontay The Bronze Bomber Wilder letting me get some work in. He is a giant !!" With that said Wilder is still a work in progress and has a long ways to go.
Damon Reed was kind of a step up for him. Although Reed is like 40 or something so maybe not much of a step, but you know at least he has a winning record. That's something, right?
Wilder is mentioned a lot on this forum, but I've yet to see him do something impressive. Like said, his best opponent thus far is a shot Damon Reed for crying out loud... He has to go at least 2 steps up before I even rate him. about the vid, he was just letting himself get hit. He would probably have dropped the tiny guy with the first serious punch (even with headgear on) if he went for it, but this is clearly a joke sparring match.
Not sure who said Deontay Wilder will be the next great American Heavyweight, but he does seem to have potential. Then again, becoming the great "American Heavyweight" isn't exactly far-fetched either. Who's near the top of that, Tony Thompson?
As a fighter, you never just "let yourself get hit". I don't care who you are, you learn to box with the little guys as you learn to box with the bigger guys. Sparring is sparring, but getting outclassed is something completely different. Of course this kid that was sparring with Deontay is going to say that "Deontay is letting me get some work in", because he more than likely trains in the same gym as him. You would never see a Kiltschko let a little guy school him like that, neither would you see Floyd Mayweather let another fighter pot shot him, just because it is some light sparring. Top fighters don't let other boxers take advantage of them under no circumstances! Deontay Wilder needs a lot more time in the gym to learn the art of boxing in my opinion!
I did it, and with me a lot of others... giving a little guy confidence, and that was even without headgear and with 4 ounce gloves. You give a small guy a little pad (or even a big one) if he gets too cocky, but for the rest you only avoid the biggest shots (and kicks in my case).
Well Robney, then that is just being dumbass and that's why you will never be a World Champion! You should never let a fighter land on you to give him confidence? That doesn't teach the fighter anything and only gives the kid a false sense of security when they step in the ring for a real fight!
I retired a long, long time ago And indeed I never have been close to becoming WC, but I could hang in there with some of the best. Got KO'd only twice in a 130+ fight (amature) career, and one of them really became the '91 (or '92) World Champ. Have to admit, that was inside a minute But it did help (or at least it didn't hurt them), some guys need that extra push to dare to attack their opponent, and where they really stand in their weightclass is in sparring matches against their own weight and in tournaments. There were a lot of top fighters in my gym... Don't think our approach hurt one bit.
Well Rodney, trust me my career was a lot more established than yours and I never was knocked out boxing the World Champion twice and another World Champion once. You don't let fighters hit you to give them confidence..PERIOD! I also can tell you straight up that it definitely was not a 1992 World Champion, because the 1991 World Championships were in Sydney, Australia and unless you boxed Eric Griffin, he wasn't the World Champion and 1992, it was the Olympics and the only American to win Gold was Oscar De La Hoya!
The proof is in his real fights where he fights nothing like this. He pulls back from punches more like Klitschko instead of just covering up like he's doing here.
It wasn't boxing... If you read back, the kicking part no headgear and 4 ounce gloves must have been a dead giveaway with that. Maybe Karate is different that way with boxing, but why not if the size and weight difference is that big. You won't get hurt, certainly not with bigass boxing gloves on. Believe me, I didn't let a MW powerpuncher hit me either, but guys as small as that can't even dream of reaching my head with a kick and my body could and should be able to take their punches without much trouble.
Wilder needs to step it up in competition but nothing serious for the next two years or so. Let him evolve. Whats his amateur record ?
