The "Cuban embargo" has nothing to with athletes defecting. The Cuban government is the one that keeps their people in country and refuses to allow them to leave. That's why there are basically no privately owned boats on the island and people wanting to escape have to rig up shitty rafts to try and get to Florida.

This is OT, but it is apparent that you don't read on world events very much, so allow me to educate you very quickly.

Now tell me in your words, how someone like Castro can afford to allow anyone to have boats with the openness to come and go as they choose from Miami or other parts of the US? atsch

A few Cuban boxers have succeeded in leaving Cuba and fighting out of germany or the US, but the best and most talented appear to be Pro-Cuba, and have not eve attempted to leave the island.
Cuban fighters have a long history and tradition of defeating Russia's best.
Perhaps, they can successfully carry the water during the US absence, where the Russians cannot.
