the IBF #1 spot had been vacant after Andrade II until Mendy ended up there.. check http://ibf-usba-boxing.com
IBF rankings by Spetember 2010 (S. middleweight 168lbs)
    1 Jean Paul Mendy France
    2 Jesse Brinkley United States
    3 Andre Dirrell United States
    4 Librado Andrade United States
Usually the IBF orders a second spot eliminator (Brinkley vs Stevens) and one for the #1 spot (Bika vs Mendy) with the winners facing each other to demand the mandatory challenger.
Possibly the IBF approved the fight with Brinkley as a mandatory defense on a request Lucy made to have an excuse to fight two bums instead of only one while acting like he has to.. doesn´t change the fact that Brinkley was just another handpicked opponent and has never been ranked #1 neither did the IBF order Lucy to face him though

#1 or #2 spot , who care cares if he`s mandatory?

Who said Interbox wanted him? That is just your speculation.

When Mendy won the shot Bute team said instantly he doesn`t deserve to fight their man.

You don`t know Bute at all. After Andrsde II he said wants Las Vegas. After Zuniga fight, being asked by American journalists if he would come in Us to fight Pavlik or Taylor he answered "Anytime".This spring they wanted to fight Kessler.Who`s running now?

Its possible Johnson is better than Pavlik but it all depends on what Pavlik has left. A lot of people are writing him off and I don't know if they should. If his actions the past few days are more personal than he's letting on then yeah, Pavlik might just be done.

If Pavlik is truly unhappy about the money and is in good shape physically and mentally than he's still a tough fighter. At his best I take Pavlik to beat Bute and a 2011 Johnson, the question is how close to his peak is Pavlik and I don't think anyone knows that right now.

I wouldn't call Johnson a better fight for Bute but I do think we know what we are getting with him. Its unsure what Pavlik has left so its possible he could have been an easier fight for Bute or he could have been more dangerous. Unfortunately, we probably won't know because Pavlik pulled a bone-headed move here.

I wouldn't mind a Bute-Johnson fight. Johnson is still a tough guy but he's faded to the point where I think Bute beats him in a clear but competitive decision. I'd prefer to see Bute-Dirrell since Pavlik and Kessler fights can't be made.

the mandatory challenger is the leading contender and that was #1 ranked Mendy and not #2 ranked Brinkley
I´ve seen Lucys post fight interview after his fight with that fat welterweight Zuniga when he claimed that he actually wants to fight the best :rofl
Why then did he duck out when Pascal or Bhop called him out and made excuses when Lucy comes in at 185lbs on fight nights whats exactly the same Pascal or Hopkins enter the ring at despite they compete at LHW where Lucy fought often earlier in his career? they weigh all the same on fightnight and Lucy says he cannot fight them because of the weight issue?:patsch
Or Dawson or Erdei who could do 168lbs.. why does Lucy only take on those bums and makes excuses about the S6 when he wants to fight good competition? He couldn´t enter the S6 because he had unfinished business with Andrade.. so but why didn´t he give Andrade a rematch straight away then? Kessler had to get his mandatory Perdomo done before he could start off in the S6 and he did it..
I don´t expect Lucy to go out and tell everyone the truth about how he wants to continue beating up semi pro cab drives and how he expects everyone in Montreal to pay for those mismatched freakshows since that only works as long as he keeps the illusion up to his nuthuggers that hes for real

You could be right and Pavlik the past week or two seems to give the impression that he could be imploding on himself. But, I'm not totally convinced thats the case. Pavlik claims its all about money, I think he is out of touch about his current earning value, but that might be whats going on here. He looked ok in his last bout especially considering his lay off and stint in rehab. Maybe he's a rusty fighter who is a bit delusional about his earning value or maybe you're right and he's simply done. I can honestly say I have no idea but I do hope its the former.

Aliviu is right and the IBF was forcing Bute to fight Brinkley, which is why it's called a mandatory. :deal

End of story....now lets move on to more meaningful news.

    Ckeck you facts before making false statements; IBF was going to have the winner between Bika-Brinkley as mandatory for Bute but Bika pulled out for some reasons (i think visa issues) and IBF was force to provide Bute with a challenger within 9 months (there are 9 months in between Andrade II and Brinkley fights); After Brinkley was appointed as the challenger, IBF had Bika-Mendy to determine their next challenger and this happened before Bute-Brinkley probably to avoid a similar situation as Bika-Brinkley; check the IBF site for july 2010 for SMW so after that you could nice and easily just STFU;

i'll point this out in case you didn't know: IBF is rather strict when it comes to mandatory defences and the term for them is 9 months ; the Brinkley defence happened after 11 months and i pointed in the above post why this delay arised

    2009-11-28 Librado Andrade
    2010-10-15 Jesse Brinkley
    2011-07-09 Jean Paul Mendy
