Well with regards to your footwork you would make sure your feet were outside yours, not only does this stop them from getting inside you but it makes the best punch to use against a southpaw (the straight right) much easier to land. Hopkins would also make sure he stepped on the southpaws foot and made use of headbutts whenever he could.
but for better or worse? or just different? Im a southpaw as well and one trainer in my gym said a lot techniques get lost for a southpaw and you are more limited because boxing techniques are meant to be executed from an orthodoz stance but my main coach said that was nonsense southpaws have a different toolset that works very well. just by switching stance the distance is already farther away from the orthodox style.
Also the shoulder roll isn't really advisable to use against Southpaws, a high guard works better. @ Eval, it changes the dynamic, the jab becomes much less of an effective weapon against a southpaw because it can be easily countered over the top or side or tapped down, and you also leave yourself open to straights, so the right hand becomes more important Similarly being a Southpaw, a strong jab isn't as important as it is for an Orthodox fighter, and you are able to throw it from many different angles, and you are also fine to finish your combos with a jab
Great vids! One of the few masters of the sport. The whole southpaw deal is simple. Just like two orthos square up two southpaws can square up. If you ortho you do thing backwards. You throw right hand leads instead of a jab, but you can definitely still use the jab to bait the southpaw in. A left hook is a leftys worst nightmare, but wont work if its not setup by a jab or lead right. If you use angles you dont necessarily need to step inside either. Not all southpaws fight the same and youd be making a mistake if you fought them all the same.
Well, since it's all about angles, you just have to find the ones that work for southpaws. I'm sure less trainers in general have elite knowledge on the subject, but there should be an equally effective technical tool-set for southpaws available. Pacquiao does many small tricks which go unnoticed that exploit the angles and set up ideal distance and positioning with his advantages as a southpaw. I'm sure Whitaker, for all his athletic prowess, could give more than a few pointers like BHop is doing in that clip.
Good stuff vidic great to know. Your right about the jab for an orthodox fighter. The southpaw stance nullifies a lot of the the work a jab does for an orthodox fighter. interesting enough my coach told me that the southpaws right hook is very dangerous to orthodox fighters since it comes at an angle orthodox fighters arent used to whereas a southpaw trains knowingly about the strengths of the left hook constantly. That was exactly what i was thinking i would love to see a video from pernell explaining all the tricks the southpaw has in his toolset to defeat an orthodox fighter. They tried to convert me when i started at the gym ala cotto and DLH but ultimately i stayed southpaw. There was two of us in the whole gym. It was a small gym anyway but still.
