The new article on espn.com/boxing has listed, what they consider, the 10 best chins in boxing history:

    1. Marvin Hagler
    2. Harry Greb
    3. Rocky Marciano
    4. George Chuvalo
    5. Carlos Monzon
    6. Kid Gavilan
    7. Jake LaMotta
    8. Carmen Basilio
    9. Gene Fullmer
    10. Tommy Farr

It seems to me like the writer got a little stuck in the SRR era but none could be considered bad picks IMO.

Agree or disagree with the list? Give me your expert opinions. :good

Oliver McCall has a better chin then Fullmer p4p while Gene had a great chin he was dropped by Robinson, Boyd and Lausse. Granted they were all big hitters especially Lausse but McCall has never even been badly hurt let alone dropped. Also Chavez, Armstrong and Tua could get mentioned.

James Toney. Fought most his career at 168 down, stood toe to toe with Peters taking his bombs.

Also Panama Al Brown deserves a mention never once finished in over 150 bouts I'm not sure if he was ever dropped. But once in a fight against Gustave Humery a riot broke out and over 20 people beat him even beating him with walking sticks he was cut, bruised and suffered a concussion but he was still conscious.

I totally agree. Toney started at 154 and as you stated was trading punches with a very big heavyweight in Peter. Toney is top 3 in this category. Oliver Mc Call is also in the top 10. Tyson had a great chin. Never went down from one punch, and if you look at his KO losses, he was either in horrible shape and/or simply took a beating almost no other heavyweight could take before going down. How many heavyweights at the age of 36 could have taken that many right hands from Lewis before going down. Even when he went down, he wasn't out, he just quit. Tua has a great chin. Foreman had an amazing chin. That dude that just fought Cintron has an amazing chin. I'm so sick of everyone only rating fighters that are dead or fighters that retired over 20 years ago. All time in any order, this is my top 10 list:

    Hagler
    Toney
    Tyson
    Tua
    La Motta
    Tex Cobb
    Duran
    Mc Call
    Foreman
    Qawi

The lists offered are all reasonable, imo. They have the blessing of the "Ayatollah of Boxing."

In terms of the original list - Oliver McCall is an obvious omission, but so is Max Baer, who had 84 fights and was only stopped for the count once, against the great Joe Louis - and he took that count fully conscious and voluntarily, later saying something to the effect that the fans, "paid to see a boxing match, not an execution."

Toney might be number one, and here's why.

80 fights...never been knocked out...been knocked down 3 times (1 by reggie johnson in the midst of Toney's fighting once a month, 1 by roy jones which did not hurt Toney and was also really more of an off-balance push, and 1 by a virtually shot Toney in the last fight with Peter catching him off-balance).

Toney has fought from his weight of 157 lbs. - 240 lbs.

He has fought TOP LEVEL competition in Middleweight, Super Middle, Light Heavy, Cruiser, and Heavyweight.

He had a style of coming to attack when he was young, and now just stands toe to toe.

I don't know of any other 160 lbs. fighter who could take punches so easily at upper weights...
