When a guy, usually untrained, wants to stand there and fire off I oblige. It works but I take a lot of punishment. I'm a slick fighter with a ton of head movement and counter punches. I do best against guys that take their time and don't pressure me too much. When I get inside with the brawlers my punches are good, but it looks sloppy and I don't get credit from the judges. Any suggestions guys?
WTF are you getting inside if you know you look **** inside and are a boxer rather than a slugger? Use footwork to stay outside, rack your points up and tie up on the inside.
General advice with brawlers: Puncher/boxer style: In and out and side movement. If you like fighting on the outside and keep going straight back, good inside fighters will slip past your jab or one two, find a way to your body, or corner you. And it's tiring trying to move all over the ring. You may also have some guys that don't even respect your power. If you fight them in spurts, they will set their feet to fight back. You move out the way or side and they will be swinging at air.
your plight sounds more mental than physical. you're choosing to fight their fight. you know better but you still choose to do what they want instead of what you need to do. what's the issue? is it pride, like you have to prove you're as tough as them? what's going on in your mind? there has to be a pay off somewhere for what you're doing? you're getting something out of it. when you decide that the value of winning is more important than what ever your "pay off" is, you'll start playing the game different. "boxing is a balance between primal instinct and civilized decision"
Thanks man. As the guy above said it is all mental. I know I should be moving side to side, but in the ring you forget. I need to remind myself to not only rely on head movement.
man up and fight him back. Put him under pressure and hurt him. then he'll hang out on the outside more and look to potshot you. then just fight your ordinary fight. the only way to fight a brawler is to GET IN CLOSE (take leverage off his swings, turn things into a shoving/grappling match, sneak in body shots to weaken him) and bite dlown and start punching. are there other ways? maybe it's best to stick and move on such and such a guy, say they're clumsy or slow. doesn't matter. brawling back gives the highest percentage result/works best on most brawlers. So start with that plan and adjust accordingly. Biggest mistake a lot of inexperienced guys make is thinking that because in theory they should be able to keep on the outside against the smaller or more aggressive man that it will work in the ring. rarely does. You probably don't train much in fighting backing up. Neither does he, but he trains far more than you in going forward. If you can hurt him and send him onto the backfoot, you're probably going to win. If you voluntarily give up the initiative. you're taing yourself outside your comfort zone and putting him squarely in his happy place (penguins, naked ladies, and all that fun stuff. You don't want that. The good news about all this is even if you lose you'll make a fun fight, and bitches will love you.
well, if you your always fiinding yourself fighting on the inside, then that is just part of your natural fighting style. just need to drill on regular drills on fighting on the inside and some breaking away techniques to get those clean shots that the judges like to see.
