The only A listers he beat were Jimmy Ellis, Jimmy Young and Ken Norton.

Sorry Earnie, you fell 7 short.

Totally agree with that! Never been a fan of Shavers. Even if he was a guy who could hit hard the lack of skills played out against him.

The fighters in Shaver's day were much better skilled and motivated than todays. However, Holyfield was a throw back fighter. It would have been a 50/50 fight.

Then, why didn't he KO any of the upper tier fighters he fought? The guy didn't KO anyone that was worth a crap.

He KO'd Ken Norton, and Muhammad Ali, Joe Bugner, Larry Holmes, Randall "Tex" Cobb, Ron Lyle and Ken Norton all credited Shavers as being the hardest puncher they had ever faced in the ring.

I agree, he was talking out his arse on the Holyfield comment, but he was no slouch either.

Don't know why you'd say that. Holyfield was always willing to slug it out, and he wouldn't be eating those shots from Shavers for too long. He wouldn't have taken those shots from a pre-prison Tyson either.

Really well thought out reply. I agree. Shavers was a blowhard then and still is today. Sure he hit hard but lacked other qualities which hobbled him in his attempts to win a championship. Most of his wins were against tomato cans. Did beat Norton, Jimmy Young and Jimmy Ellis, fine wins but little else. I used to think highly about Shavers - - - even believed the propaganda about him being such a good family man and husband, then I read his autobiography, at which I lost respect for him as a person. Believe me, I am *NOT* the "morality police" but the way he talked about commiting adultery on his long suffering wife, impregnated his mistress several times and then divorced his wife and left her to raise their five daughters alone made me sick. If I recall correctly he was married several times after that (? 5 marriages?) And then he would appear on Pat Robertson's 700 CLUB and pontificate about how he "Loves dah Lawd" and "trusts GEE-ZUS" - - - UGH! I couldn't stomach his bullshi*t. I'm glad he got his azz whipped so many times. Can't hardly think of anyone who deserved it more.

If he'd gotten the decision against Ali, he'd be thought of much differently. Watch that fight again closely...Ali landed some good shots in the 15th. The rest of the fight Earnie blocked everything Ali threw and bashed him in the skull repeatedly. But at that time you couldn't get a decision against Ali unless you killed him AND THEN killed the zombie version of him that rose from the dead, and even then it would be a split decision, with some kind of recount, and then a lot of talk about how Ali's three-year exile hurt him in this 1977 fight.

Earnie was highly, highly dangerous, and highly, highly vulnerable, which is what made him compelling. Tyson just has the wrong equipment for Earnie to deal with.
