In all honesty.....Roy wasn't a great, technical fighter. He had amazing talents and God given ability that was unmatched. Roy's defense was 90% reflexes and his offense was a heavy blend of athletism, with dose of skill. When Roy put on all that muscle to win the HW title from Ruiz.....he should have never rushed the process of getting back down to LHW b/c that aged Roy and he's never been the same. Think about this.....if Roy didn't have all that talent or god given abilities....and was just working with his current skill sets, with that style. Roy wouldn't have been "Superman Roy".
Nah if you watch them closely, there are certain moves that Floyd obviously took from Jones. The way he pivots and throws his lead right is exactly the way Roy did it. Floyd's whole offense is roy jones , except he doesn't throw combinations like he did.
Ive been in boxing a while and at least half of the boxers under 30 will tell you Roy is their idol and some even try to emulate him. A lot of the prospects coming up in the sport you can tell grew up watching him. He changed the sport in a way.
i would have to agree. roy was a special combo of power, speed, reflexes, athleticism. floyd is more mental, technical. roy was more instinct, fuid. if i had a choice between their styles, i take roy's any day. :good
Floyd has said that he emulates Pernell Whitaker and Aaron Pryor. With that being said, I see a lot of Floyd Sr. in his style. Shoulder roll defense, the right uppercut counter when in it, even that lead left hook--though Roy and Floyd Jr. had/have better reflexes and athleticism than Floyd Sr. That left elbow to the chest and tying a fighter up, think that comes from Roger.
Where is Aaron Pryor in Floyd??? I think Floyd didn't like Roy much because of his personality, how could Roy say he's the best, when Floyd clearly thinks he's the best? But he definately took some moves from him.
in the 90s, For me Roy Jones jr was the best Professional athlete in the World with Michael Jordan Michael Jordan (Basket) Roy Jones Jr (Boxing) Zinedine Zidane (Football) Mario Lemieux (Hockey) Tiger Woods Golfat the end of this decade
In the defensive-minded version of Floyd now, I don't see him anywhere. But younger Floyd during his 130 days was leaps and bounds more prone to letting his hands go. Floyd didn't like Roy because back in the day Roy said he didn't think Floyd was deserving of the pound for pound best in the world status.
His style is definitely a product of Floyd Sr. and Roger, who have said that SRR was basically a big influence on them. Really, Floyd had the benefit of being raised in a boxing family and learned from a young age so hes a better version of the older Mayweathers, who he learned their mistakes from and didnt have to make them himself.
