Mayweather jr's "trouble" against southpaws

he had trouble with zab. judah still lost but for whatever reason mayweather had a TON of difficulty those first four rounds and suffered a knockdown

He's only fought Zab, Corely, and Mitchell to my knowledge. He lost 4 or 5 of the first 6 rounds against Judah and was rocked by the light-hitting Corely, but otherwise he dominated all 3 and its hard to say if those problems were strictly due to their southpaw stances. Most fighters have problems with southpaws, though.

His problems with the southpaw stance are vastly overstated.

He had more trouble with Zab's speed and tricks that anything else, and its not even that hard to see. Zab was reversing the James Toney staple, and had decent success for 3 of the first four rounds-no worse. Mayweather would press, Zab would hide his left behind his shoulder, and counter with it when Floyd tried the left hook. Beyond a single counter right(Speed, again) Zab did most of his good work with this tactic.

Floyd went after Corley with a ton of aggression and was looking to(And succeeded, by and large) to beat him down. Demarcus fought back and landed a couple good shots. Southpaw stance had little to do with it.

Watch his pick apart Mitchell, and its clear to see its the speed and power of Judah that brought most of the problems.

 

in your post is a very good analysis of judah and corley. well thought out. however, mitchell was light years away in terms of the guy who so troubled zoo in the first fight. picking apartment mitchell at that time is already indicative of talent

Its more how. Clear, patient, and technically rather flawless. The lead right, the stepping off, the turning in to take away the hook.

You are absolutely correct that Mitchell didn't have his old stuff, but the fight does show that its not the technical elements of fighting a southpaw that bothered Floyd, more the attributes of the opponent(Judah) or the pace he was dictating(Corley).

oh to be fair i was knitpicking. it, along with the corley fight, DO exemplify how an aggressive mayweather can pick apart any style. which is why (unfortunately) i see pac having little chance. pac holds physical advantages over mayweather, which floyd has shown the ability to remove and negate

 

Pac's style is about all that makes it interesting.

If you look at it from a purist standpoint, its a mismatch in Mayweathers favor. Pacquiao is really aggressive, herky jerky, and fast, however, and that CAN give Mayweather trouble in spots. I'll wait to see how he handles Ortiz, who is Pacquaio without the ingenuity and strange rhythm. Hits about as hard, hands move close to as fast.

Its a perfect tune up, really. Pacquiao is superior to Ortiz, and the tougher scalp to bag, but Ortiz might be the best tune up to fight Manny within 20 pounds of those weights.
