I think it depends on the situation. But for the most part, having a ridiculous amount of weight-classes already should fulfill the purpose of finding compromising weights which both parties can agree to.
it is not about the guys it is about the sport. 20 years after most guys fight they say their opponents were the best who ever fought. Why wouldn't they? Hagler is going to say Hearns was the best ever and Hearns about Hagler and Chavez about Whitaker. It is about boxing and putting two guys who are tops together. Finding a way for guys to fight is too much away from boxing.
Dont like catchweights and most likely never will, rarely do you see both guys benifit from the new limit, you either get a larger drained fighter or a smaller bloated fighter, usually you find one guy has been completely ****ed due to the new limit. catchweights should only be found in warm up fights and should certainly not be found in title fights.
As long as it's reasonable i have no problem with it.Fighters these days get's to rehydrate and don't come in weighing the same on fight night as what they weighed on the scale anyway.Weak excuse! NEXT!!
I have said this for a long time but if i can ever unify the titles, im gonna have someone bring a trashcan into the ring while they do my interview on HBO and im gonna throw all the belts in the garbage and walk out of the ring without a word. This is a dream of mine
co-mutha****in'-sign Only time I don't have a problem with catchweights is when two fighter are separated by two divisions(like Paq and JMM) and they use the catchweight to meet in the middle(not like Paq and JMM). But definitley not during championship fights. But if you are separated by one division and you wanna fight for a title in the weight above you then you need to be a ****in' man and challenge the champion at his weight class period(like Hatton/Floyd and Floyd/Oscar). If you can't make the weight then keep your ass in your own division.
catch weights have always been there but never made an issue of Jones Koed Hill and both weighted over 175lbs officially it was still a lightheavy weight fight these super and junior divisions are catchweights themselves SRR weighed 149lbs and fought Lamotta . jake weighed 161 and a half pounds for a MIDDLEWEIGHT fight this has never been unusual until the premaddonnas today make it an issue, its a meal here or there
As long as you are not asking a fighter to come up/down from their weight class too much then it's reasonable.
Neither. I'd rather have the two fighters fight at the actual weight, but catchweights have existed in the sport for a long time, even for titles. It certainly isn't disrespecting the sport's history to have them.
right- it just wasnt called "catch weight" Jones Hill was announced as a lt HW fight even tho both were over Same for corrales Clottey ww fight both 149
