Should a fighter fight primarily for himself, or for the fans and the sport itself?

Is it more important to try to get the win no matter what, or is it more important to remember that the reason you are paid to fight is because the fans want to see an exciting show?

Is it more important to achieve financial security by chasing the low-risk/high reward options, or is it more important to challenge yourself and potentially come undone?
