Why do people like to jump the gun and say a fighter is ruined after only 1 loss???

The ruined title is now being attached to anyone who loses, yet most boxers come back from their first loss.

One thing is for sure.....Pavlik was ruined for good after his first loss. Cotto wasn't ruined but it surely took alot out of him, If you watch pre Margarito Cotto vs. the current one they look like two different people.

 

I think "diminished" or "declined" is often more accurate.

Take cases like Miguel Cotto and Meldrick Taylor. They weren't the same after their first defeats, but still very good fighters who went on to win world titles at higher divisions.

 

The Margarito loss wasn't a ruination for Cotto, but it very nearly was. It was a huge setback, not just in terms of his career momentum but in how he came back physically and mentally. It's been a long road but he has come a long way since then.

I'm not sure if he's back where he was pre-Margarito, but the duct-taped and superglued Cotto of today would dominate and stop the newy broken Cotto of a couple of years ago.

dont fool yourself. cotto is ready to be kod and is a shell of his former self. it was a great win against clottey post margo, but clotttey is the biggest fraud in boxing.

clottey will make a comeback, and like kp, is great fade material.

The imbecile quotient on a boxing forum is ridiculously high. People see one win and suddenly the guy is the GOAT. One loss later and the guy is a glass-jawed hype-job.

I don't see how Tito Trinidad, Jermain Taylor and Zab Judah were "never the same" after their first loss. Tito looked just as confident, powerful and effective blowing away Mayorga and Cherifi after the Hopkins fight as he did beating Joppy and Vargas before B-Hop. With Jermain Taylor, the questions over his punch resistance were always there (see how he nearly capitulated late in the first fight with a relatively past-prime/toothless B-Hop), sure Pavlik was the first guy to expose it, but he couldn't repeat the trick when Taylor was very competitive with him over 12 rounds in their rematch. Zab Judah produced the best win and performance of his career (stopping Cory Spinks) years after his defeat to Tszyu.

I disagree with the inclusion of Riddick Bowe as well, I don't think he was left unalterably changed by the first Golota fight, he had simply reached the end of his physical prime due to the way he had conducted himself in and out of the ring over the preceding few years, and Golota benefitted from that. Had Bowe been in there with some can, he'd still have looked **** because he was a spent force.

I think you have a fair point with the others (Vargas, Morrison, Golota, M.Taylor), but the jury is still out on Cotto. Need to see more of him before I decide. He looked good against Foreman, did so well against Clottey in difficult circumstances, was outclassed by Pacquiao, and may simply look a bit less effective now because he's facing bigger men. I'll hedge my bets on that one for now.

 

The most vocal "fight fans" are extremely fickle, seriously delusional, desperate for attention, and often borderline mentally ****ing handicapped.

I also hate when a guy wins in Oct and is proclaimed the best current fighter, until Nov when a different guy wins a fight and is suddenly the best.

The fawning over the 0 is also quite annoying. 99% of the time, if the guy has a 0, it means he hasn't fought enough or the right (wrong) guy.

He began his career getting kayoed left and right, and in a year has won 3 out of 4 world title bouts - and was competitive in the loss, to a "next big thing"...AND, with one of the wins he swatted down "the other next big thing".

As for Lopez, it remains to be seen what lasting ill effects he suffered. Even a dominant performance against Oliver won't really tell us much. If "Mighty Mike" wins, or comes even close - that substantiates Siri having actually ruined JuanMa. :deal

If and when they rematch, if it goes the same way it could eat another large chunk out of Lopez and leave him with not much left. You could then say Lopez was ruined by a single opponent, over the course of two meetings.

:deal really agree with this. It depends on the case really. I think Margo ****ed up Cotto's career. He's come a long way since, but he's not the same IMO.
