1- Ortiz hit him with an illegal headbutt

2- Ref calls time, takes a point away

3- Fighters come together to make amends, while Cortez looks to time keeper assuring the time is right and ready to start the fight

4- Mayweather hits Ortiz with two punches as they go to seperate

5- Cortez never called time in, never said "Box"

Bottom line- You can't be ko'd when the fight hadn't been restarted. You have to call a time out to take a point away. Whether the fighters were allowed to approach one another is not the point, the REF must call a "time in" for a fight to resume, usually this happens when he says "BOX!", which never happened.
If your arguement is that you need to protect yourself at all times, your right. And Ortiz can be blamed for not doing so, but the punches that landed were not landed after Cortez said "break", but rather after he "timed out" the fight, with no "time in", nothing legal can take place.

    THERE WAS NO "TIME IN"!

It's not "time in" that has to be called, that is only to do with the clock. Its box now or fight on and that WAS called.

There wasnt either as CORTEZ' eyes were on the judges. :smoke

It really was a cheap shot. Let's admit this. :smoke

It clearly should be a disqualification. So obvious. No time-in called and the ref was looking at elsewhere.

Cortez says "lets go" then looks for the judges to say "time in"

just a weird situation where the ref is completely not looking at both of the fighters while one man had both his hands down and looking at the ref, then the other putting in 2 clean blows

I thought it went like this:

    1. Illegal headbutt.
    2. Cortez stops time to take point away (Ortiz touches gloves and apologizes a thousand times during this)
    3. Whilst the apologies were still going on, Cortez half-heartedly signals for them to box.
    4. Knowing he shouldn't have done that before calling time back in (silly prat :patsch), he's looking outside the ring, knowing he got it the wrong way round, and pays no attention to what's going on between the fighters.
    5. Before he gets a chance to call time in and draw them to fight properly, Mayweather knocks Ortiz down.
    6. Cortez, knowing he's ****ed up quite badly, thinks "Meh, what the ****. I may as well start counting him out."

:goodvery well put, it looks like Cortez sloppiness when he "halfheartedly" told the fighters to box caused the whole situation

If you believe this, you could not have watched the fight.

Don't talk about a fight you didn't ****ing watch closely enough to understand.

Yep, very solid post Rico. That's essentially how it played out. Cortez is woefully inept at times and it showed here. He lost control and Mayweather pounced. He did want to DQ Floyd off the back of his own mistake so picked up the count.

Well done Joe, you fat old ****. Yet more controversy in a fight you were officiating. Don't think for a second that he wont be the third man in the ring for another big fight. I can only pray that he is run over and that way we can truly rid boxing of this moron. Chuck Terry O'Conner in there for good measure.

It's no excuse for Ortiz not keeping his hands up or intentionally butting Floyd.
