My final thoughts are that this won't be ANYONE'S final thoughts.

This **** will go on forever, and never get any more meaningful or relevant.

 

Props to him for actually steppin up and backin Ortiz down. He was gonna win regardless, he was already breaking down Ortiz in a beat down manner. Ortiz did had some good chances of landing a good punch to make the fight more competitive, and if the fight went on.. he woulda had more but it was still in Mayweathers court all the way.

So all props to Mayweather, but that being said.. he always finds a way to **** up..

- Blow up on Merchant .. check
- Contradicted himself once .. ok fine its forgiven.. but check
- Contradicted himself again and again.. wtf.. again check

 

very good analysis, I agree with almost except for this:

- I think Mayweather was in control but the very few times he got hit cleanly (not more than 3-4 times, especially the punches that landed before the headbutt in the 4th round), he did not take them as well as he used to. At least that's my impression. He had his smirk or he shook his head with despise like he used to, but something tells me he really felt the punches this time

- I felt Merchant was great. Right on the mark. No point kissing Floyd's ass or making a boring interview. The problem was Floyd's insecurity and immaturity. Nothing wrong with what Larry said. He just showed Floyd a replay of what happened and Floyd started to feel REALLY uncomfortable and he got emotional.

I think Larry was awesome when he shouted back at Floyd.

On a side note, I think Floyd's emotional immaturity is what keeps him motivated. He constantly needs to prove people wrong, so that's why he will train, and train, and train. To prove himself.

now to answer your questions:

1- no, Cortez was incredibly casual ans sloppy.

When Kenny Bayless referees a fight, he uses crystal clear gestures and shout clear instructions. You just can't leave grey areas.

And this is what happened. IMO nothing Cortez did was clear. But to be fair, if Cortez was very sloppy, Ortiz was stupid and Floyd was opportunistic

2- What Floyd did was acceptable because allowed. I admit I would have done it myself. But this because I would naturally be afraid to loose the fight and would take this shortcut to win.

3- Floyd was very uncomfortable when Larry showed him the replay. Actually if he were a mature person, he would just say: "yes I did this and it won me the fight." He should not be ashamed, what is done is done.

But Floyd wants to be praised. So he got emotional, deep down he knew it was a bit cheap and classless, and it showed his fear of losing

4- yes I think Ortiz was beaten mentally, hence the headbutt, the apologies over and over, the hugs etc. He is just as immature as Floyd but his immaturity does not help him - as opposed to Floyd's

1. Do you think Cortez was in control of the action when the incident happend? It dosen't matter if he was in control or not. He instructed the boxers to resume boxing. The fault if fault is to be laid falls solely on Ortiz.

2. Do you think what Mayweather did was acceptable? (I havent asked the same about Ortiz as we know it wasnt and he had a point deducted). Yes it was acceptable. They were instructed to resume boxing. Ortiz should have not put his hands down. Was he going to apoligize a fourth time.

3. Do you think Mayweather was uncomfortable when questioned about his actions? No, Larry Merchant who usually is a good comentator has something against Mayweather. More than just being a profesional critic. I do think Mayweather over reacted, but Merchant's questions were on the point of bullying. His If I was 50 years younger quote was also over reacting.

4. Do you think Ortiz was pleased the fight ended the way it did? (Odd question I know but he didnt seem to protest) Like an excuse? I think there is a good chance that he was looking for a way out.

The only dirty tacticts were the headbutts by Ortiz. The last one was one of the worst most blantant headbutts I have ever seen.
This is kind of a shame. While Mayweather was winning every round, Oritiz when he wasn't being dirty was giving a very good account of himself.
When Mayweather threw the first of the two punches that ended the fight Ortiz was looking at Mayweather. Not that it matters, once they were told to resume and they were told to resume. The boxers must heed the rule Protect yourself at all times. He put his arms down at his own risk and paid for it.

As far as the physical tolls goes Ortiz is as good as almost anyone. I said before the fight he's about as good as Cotto, which is saying he's good better than a lot of other guys but not quite at the top. He's young and can learn from this. He needs to learn from this because it is what happens between his ears that is going to make or break him and right now he can go either way.

People are starting to bring up the part of the Mayweather/Mosley fight where Mosley is warned for elbowing Mayweather. Than Mayweather and Mosley exchange words, and Mayweather pops Mosley. You can see the diffrance in Mosley and Ortiz. When Ortiz gets hit he looks for help. He didn't get any because Mayweather did nothing wrong in acordance with the rules of the sport and within the agrements of sportsmanship. Mosely on the other hand understood that he was in a fight and did his best to protect himself after getting caught.

Where do or where should they go from here. Forget Pacquiao, when it comes to Mayweather we deserve to see him in the most competive fight possible. He had his get rid of the rust/tune up fight with Ortiz. We don't need to see him in another one. Pacquiao is not in the same league as Mayweather. While I don't think Martinez is going to beat Mayweather at 154 I'm also not convinced he beats Mayweather at 160. (I think Martinez is something of an over achever). It is Martinez at 154 or 160 that has the best chance to beat Mayweather.
As for Otiz I'd putt him in a cupple of top 15 fights before going back to the championship level. With all his flaws he's young and has time to improve on them.

Great performance. He was taking the kid to school. The kid got frustrated and commited a blatant cheap shot foul. The kid then got scared realizing he had pissed Mayweather off. He tried to hug and kiss to ease Mayweather down. The ref restarted the fight. Ortiz still wanted to cuddle, Mayweather being a real fighter, resumes punching when its time to fight. Knocks the cheating chump out KO.

A dissapointing end to a fight that Mayweather was winning easily, but with Ortiz doing better than I had expected. The headbutt was nasty and dealt with properly, maybe even deserving of a dq. The apologies were made, the point was deducted and it was time to fight. It looked like the only one that knew what was going on was Mayweather. Ortiz lack of protecting self at all times robbed me of a few more rounds of boxing. I'm pissed at both, but it's hard to find fault with Mayweathers actions. It was a legal shot. Maybe not sportsmanlike for some, but legal nonetheless as Cortez did appear to order the fight resumed. I do think that Mayweather was going to win no matter what, but Ortiz could have..... nah, lets not do the if and maybe coulda woulda shoulda dance. I am just glad that i passed on this ppv and watched it in the local pub.

1. yes cortez was in control. he called for the fight to resume, and then looked to the timekeeper for the countdown of the round I presume.

2. Mayweather did nothing wrong within the rules of boxing... period!

3. Mayweather was uncomfortable, and maybe even feeling guilty about the sucker punch, but Ortiz should have been protecting himself.

4. Ortiz was in shock and probably still doesn't know himself how he feels. It could be a great learning experience for Victor, he got ko'd, but didn't take a sustained beating over 12 rounds and he could tell himself that he had some success. He should be happy the way it ended. If he's into denial he can alway tell himself he would have won if it weren't for the (legal) cheap shot.

At the moment when Merchant was asking the questions I think Floyd was surprised and annoyed at the overwhelmingly negative crowd reaction. That combined with Merchant obviously trying to make him explain wasn't a situation he wanted to deal with.

4. Do you think Ortiz was pleased the fight ended the way it did? I think Ortiz was proud of his performance up to that point. He was a major underdog who, IMO, was fighting an even fight against the #2 P4P fighter in the sport.

I gave rounds 1 and 3 to Mayweather. Rounds 2 and 4 to Ortiz (until the last 20 secs of 4, when the butt occurred).

Final thought was that Ortiz screwed it up with the obviously intentional butt and gave Floyd an easy out. If he had kept up what he had been doing before the butt, he may have won the upset.

 

Floyd was in control and would have stopped Ortiz eventually IMO, but i do think that Ortiz would have had his moments in spots. Saying that, what Floyd did was dirty but what Ortiz did was as dumb as it gets. Did he not see Floyd not reach out to hug him back (which he shouldn't have done in the first place as its a fight) and did he not see Floyd pop Shane in the mouth for a cheap shot and Gatti when he was looking at the referee? He had already gotten a point deduction and had apologized already, wtf are you hugging people for? Its a fight and he should have known that Floyd was that kind of person. He should have just went back to fighting. Another thing he did that was stupid, was after he got the left hook cheap shot, why didn't he look at Floyd ( you know, the one that just punched him in the face) and instead look at the ref? I'm sorry but hes dumb as hell for that.

That's my final thoughts on the fight, and its only been 3 days removed from it and this discussion is already getting on my nerves. I think we should focus on other fights but sadly, i have a feeling that this debate will drag on for a very long time, 5hit it might not ever end.

 

Ortiz wasn't the one sucker punching his way to a KO and ending the fight. Headbutts happen in boxing, sucker punches like that rarely do. In fact I've never seen a sucker punch that vicious in boxing and one so bad it ended the fight and stole every paying fans dollar.

 

Most headbutts are from acadental clashes of the heads. The ones that are on pourps aren't nearly as blantant as the last one that Ortiz got Maywether with. There also was no sucker punch. Ortiz should have had his hands up.
