In Gatti vs. Ward I, Gatti was warned in the early stages of the fight for a low blow. In the fourth round, he landed another huge low blow and Ward went down. Cappuccino then separated the fighters and told Gatti to go to a neutral corner and told the timekeeper to stop the time. Rightly, Gatti had a point deducted but then the bell rang without both fighters fighting for the remaining 8 seconds. Why? Because the crowd was so loud that the timekeeper didn't hear Cappuccino's instruction to stop the time.

This is a key point relating to Mayweather and Ortiz. The timekeeper did not ring the bell at the end of the round because he didn't hear the instruction to do so by Cortez. Cortez was telling him to restart the fight when Mayweather landed the punches, meaning that the two shots Mayweather landed were illegal.

The referee tells the timekeeper what to do but if the timekeeper doesn't hear, then he overrules the referee. He is the one who officially decides when the actions stops and starts and not the referee.

But the fighters dont know if the time keeper hasnt started the time yet. They follow the instructions of the referee.
You dont wait the ref to tell you fight and then ask the timekeeper if the clocks ticking.
They should have hand signals if they don't.

    Jack,
The timekeeper is supposed to follow the ref. If he doesn't, the fight is technically still on, though there are various outcomes if it gets really weird.

The real issue is that Cortez didn't follow the rules at all, but timekeeper issues do not factor in to the Mayweather "controversy."

Obviously jack wasnt looking at the same fight, because after the ref deducted the points form Ortiz, he gave the "hand signal" to start the fight. After the signal was given, ***** ass, coward ass Ortiz, fa##ot ass Ortiz is still huggin' and kissing Mayweather. They give a lil hug, Ortiz backs up with his hands down and Floyd timed him perfectly with the set up left hook, followed by the straight right! My ? is after getting hit with the left hook why didn't Ortiz put up his guard? COWARD thats why
