FW to leave Sky according to Twitter

So FW gets unhappy about sky not screening anymore PPV events.

Well I am not paying £10 per month. Already subscribe to sky sports, ESPN and Premier sports. I am not dropping down another £10 per month!

 

If it's a station that is going to week in, week out show World class fights from around the world, backed up with Fwank's own stable. Together with possibly showing fights from his back Catalogue (as it currently does). Then is that not what everyone was asking for when Setanta were up and running, a dedicated boxing channel.

I know nobody knows yet but surely everyone would be up for that?

He does have good ties with Don King ,Bob Arum and didn't he recently hold talks with Richard .Schaefer.

If theres going to be fights every weekend and only half of them in UK Fwank has to have struck a deal with promoters in Germany and the States imo. Ill gladly pay 10 a month for more boxing. All it means is not buying the ring, which is shite anyway, and one less horse to back a month. Whether the missus will be pleased with a channel dedicated solely to boxing is the only stumbling block as far as im concerned

 

I have a feeling boxing is going to crawl back onto network tv over the next few years, would be nice if Frank could tie in this new channel with ITV or something, like Channel 5 are with Primetime. Such a pity the casual sports fan has missed out on Froch.

As for 2.50 a week for a channel showing hours of boxing every day. Yes please. If I couldn't afford that I'd be worrying about more than watching boxing, facking hell!

I would be very surprised if frank's big events were not PPV. He is not gonna give up PPV sales even with a £10 subscription!

 

If only it was that easy. Setanta with premiership football, Rugby, Golf, boxing, UFC and more failed. It may not sound like a lot of money but your asking people who are more likely to already subscribe to Sky/ESPN to put up money for another channel adding more money to there monthly bills.

I aint convinced people who subscribe to sky sports are going to be in a rush to subscribe to a boxing channel.

Ha ha, Carl Froch is going to be the main man on Sky and Tyson Fury's the biggest boxing star in the UK while Darren Barker's fighting a P4P on HBO.

Setanta failed because they overspent on **** (football) while not focusing on organically growing their audience. they wanted to compete with Sky, but without that company's very deep pockets.

I doubt all the other sports they showed combined cost as much and returned as little as the SPL. Complete waste of cash on an audience that are completely transient and will go wherever the football is.

If they'd gone for tennis, boxing, golf and UFC, they'd have been fine - they'd have made a small loss at first but built a subscriber base that could have withstood the expansion.

 

Setanta ran out of money. They had a good business model in terms of growing the business (they legitmately had a lot of subscribers at the end) but didn't have the pockets deep enough to get to the point where it was a money making business.

Its also bollocks to say the money spent on football wasn't well spent. That was crucial to their success.

 

It wasn't the SPL that killed Setanta, it was when they went after the English Premier League (£392m), internationals (eg £5m for Croatia England) and FA cup that did them. That was a whole different level of spending. Setanta launched with SPL football and had a business model that worked at that time

 

I know they overspent on the non prem football among other things. My point I was trying to make was even with all the sport they offered they still wasnt what you can say a success.

The reality of the situation was most people subscribed for football and come summer time cancelled there sub.

Even if we look at ESPN we dont know if they are actually hitting break even numbers. ESPN have deep pockets so its not so much an issue for now but still would like to know how many subscribers they have.

Is combat sports even something which drives subscriptions? I mean if ESPN dropped UFC would it have a major effect. If Sky Sports dropped boxing would they lose that many subscribers?

 

Do we know that Sky don't have some involvement in this? It seems unlikely to me that VVarren would burn any bridges with them and it's not like Sky have been downsizing his fighters in recent weeks. They have pushed Cleverley-Bellew for example.
