Joe Louis h2h against other all time greats.....

The view I have of the Louis-Walcott series is that Walcott allowed the first one to be close, due to giving Louis a lot of respect. Then in their second fight he gave less respect to Louis, was outpointing him on the scorecards and got knocked out.

The first fight against Louis was the best Walcott could ever fight with his style in my opinion. It just wasn't enough to take the title from the champ back then. With today's scoring system he would have probably pulled it off.

 

...donavan did not referee the louis/walcott I fight. it was ruby goldstein, and he voted for walcott, so the comment that donovan was a crooked referee is wrong, as are many of the other anti-louis statments on this thread are.

 

...the fight was not the blatant robbery that it has been so often claimed to be. while i think walcott won, he did give away the last two rounds by circling away. however in one of those rounds, and this is on the film of the fight, walcott is on the ropes and instead of moving in, louis backs away and lets walcott off the hook. i think at this point louis was reluctant to lead because walcott kept effectively countering him.

nat fleischer and some other boxing writers thought louis had won.
