Is roadwork really necessary to achieve a high stamina?

For example, several boxers I know can also run 3 miles at at least an 8 min/mile pace. I, however, run 3 miles every morning and am usually stuck at 28 min.

However, I have awesome stamina in the ring and am capable of high punch output and work rate. Is it possible to achieve Marciano-type or Fighting Harada-esque stamina through just hard bag work and sparring?

Whatever boxing coaches like to tell you, you don't have to run to have good stamina.

For me, unfortunately, its the opposite.. :( I only waste time doing long running thing. Ropes on the other hand takes my gas off just like that...

Totally agree, I'm a sub 3 hour marathon runner who took up boxing late, I thought I was fit until I did boxing training, I found my running played no part when I first started with my trainer I couldn't even do one minute rounds on bags or pads.

I stopped running for 3 months and trained 3-4 times a week with my trainer eventually getting up to 3 minute rounds.

A week before I started boxing I did a 10k race and finished in the time of 36.30.

A week ago after 3 months boxing training out of the blue I decided to do a 10k i was worried about having no running training.

I completed the course in 35.04 to my amazement, both were flat courses with no hills.

So my answer is that running plays no part

Running also serves to condition the legs to some extent. A couple of runs a week is plenty to compliment a good boxing regime.

Nothing is going to prepare you for the physical demands of boxing better than actually doing it. Don't let running get in the way of the more important aspects of training. A friend of mine has bad knees and can't do any roadwork but he's just as fit if not fitter then everyone else at the gym.

For me I find running a good measure of how fit I am, but wouldn't say its a crucial means to getting fit.

I started running after I'd been boxing for a few months and I noticed my gym workouts became alot more productive and overall easier. I wouldn't say running is a must, but I'd say that it's necessary to supplement your gym workouts with extra cardio e.g. cycling, swimming, eliptical, etc.

I used to run alot, 5-8 miles a day , 8-10 on a sunday. I dont anymore and im a hell of alot fitter in every aspect.... except running distance. If i ever need to do a long distance run or marathon id consider going back to it :D
