Despite Qawi putting on a great show against Spinks, Holyfield was odds-on with the bookies for that fight.

 

Alfonso Gomez very average mexican boxer. Made a lot of big fights from Contender fame which he lost on the first round. Stopped a very shot Gatti.

Jean Pascal. Career made from being one of the only decent Candian boxers. Fundamentally flawed.

Glen Johnson. One shot against Roy Jones and benefited from a sparse division.

 

Iran Barkley

 

My Pick would be Martin Rogan.

i dont see how you can say overachieved in general, people like Iran Barkley beat Hearns twice, and some other good names.

i think it is more like people who where lucky to have be at a time where there was not much decent competition about,

i think boxers like Clinton Woods/ Dennis Andries got there by sheer hard work and determination,

boxers like sven otke who got there by currpt juding and match making /fixing

overachievers to me are McGuigian (who went on to be a personallity without ever being that great in the ring)

and Marciano who only beat old men or light- heavy weights.

 

If he's surprised you 3 times you were probably wrong all along...

He's deceptive though, I'd agree with that, but he's got a really good, rangy jab. Decent power.

And his fitness / intangibles still count as 'talent'. He's a great in those areas.

 

I'd say David Haye. It's still quite a mystery that this chap became a two weight world champion by only having to have to beat Enzo and Valuev, shocking.

 

Carl Froch.

I used to blow off his chances in previous fights, I thought Taylor would be his peak. But since then he's proved me wrong time after time. He's not supposed be this successful in such a strong division with such limited ability.

He doesn't have amazing power or boxing ability, yet he manages to grind down his opponents and either force the stoppage or out work them.

Froch's biggest asset is probably his heart, overcoming all his negatives and powering on to be one of the best SMWs in the world.

Edit: I don't know about the bookies, but i know that very few were picking Holyfield to win that fight. He was thought of as an inexperience upstart who was going in over his head far too early (i think it was on his 11th pro fight).
