So you are saying he is overrated also because of the naivety of the boxing fans not seeing his other great fights? Perhaps that is what being in the great superfights get him, although the other fights still stand out and will for boxing history.

I do think Hearns had just as much impact as Duran, maybe more in the whole historical aspect of superfights and great fights in the 1980s. As well as putting himself on the map, every fight he had is memorable in someway. The Hagler fight puts him in a place Duran has not been. Tommy was more pivotal in the fab 4 fights than Duran was. I actually find people talking about Tommy's fights more than Durans. They know he beat Cuevas for his first title and Benitez for his second and Hill in 1991, and they know he was first man to win 4 and then 5 titles as well as numerous Vegas fights. Duran's wins over Buchanan and Moore and Barkley are good, but they do not compare to Cuevas,Benitez and Hill. There is more defense of Duran since his fans seem defensive rather than factual. When Duran is mentioned some overrate him , but Hearns big fights are seen as more iconic than Duran's, and as time goes by Tommy gets more mention. They are linked together that is for sure. Simplifying Hearns is like saying, all people talk about is Duran's fight with SRL and his quitting after, which there is some truth to, which is pretty much the only criteria people use for Duran being great regardless of his lightweight reign, which in reality most people do not rate him 1-10 because of lightweight. Well what gets him there? The Leonard fight?. If that is true, then where does that put the great SRL? Duran does not have the wins that Tommy Hearns has no matter what. Regardless of all the talk and all that, Hearns has the better wins and the worst losses, and the losses hurt his legacy. More than they should have. Still. I never thought his losses meant people thought only of those things. Tommy is thought of in numerous ways for his knockout punches and boxing ability and he is the most pivotal of all the fab 4 in excitement and memorable fights.. He was involved in the best fights of the 4 greats.

It shows how great Haglers chin was in that he took several of those right hands and by the end of 'that' 1st round was able to shrug them off and put the hurt on Tommy .

It was a priviledge to be a fight fan in the 70's and 80's when the four kings were at the peak of thier powers;)

I agree with everything you say and im a bigger fan of Duran than Hearns. And im not saying Hearns is overrated I said he is underrated because people judge him harshly due to his losses

But in the boxing world itself, I feel that Duran gets a little more respect than Hearns. Perhaps it is because of Durans demeanour. People that watched him fight remember his wolf like single minded approach to destruction. There is an aura around Duran that is different to any other fighters, even Hearns despite being in the best of the fab 4 fights.

That may be the reason as to why fans of Duran become defensive rather than factual.

I defend my position all the time. But when someone makes a good post you cannot argue for the sake of arguing. That is ridiculous.

You must be out of your goddamn mind. Hearns caught Duran when Duran came down from like 190 lbs which is why Duran had no punch resistance, something that made him great during his career.

Duran beat Leonard, beat Barkley who knocked Hearns out, turned Hagler into a boxer in a losing effort, and dominated for damn near 6-7 years at lw.

Hearns never dominated any of the divisions he was in that had good comp.

Hearns is one hell of a fighter, but he was not as dominant as Duran was in his prime. That reason, and not the ko losses to Sugar and Hagler is why Hearns doesn't rank as high as Duran.

Again Duran gets the excuses. He said he never trained for Benitez, Leonard 2 and Hearns, and stopped training a few weeks before Hagler.
As for Tommy Hearns. Duran never fought a guy with Hearns power and speed in his career before or after Hearns. Evidence of this is Duran was never knocked out like that again. You would think that he would have had weight trouble other fights and been knocked out cold by other guys and he wasn't. Hearns was the variable he never had to deal with before. Duran fought I think about 35 times after Hearns and was not knocked out cold again. Joppy stopped him on TKO, but didn't come close to knocking him cold. Duran is not bigger than boxing. The facts speak for themselves. Hearns fought a great fight and used his height and speed and reach perfectly and Duran could not deal with it. Any other explanation is unfair to the winner. Anyone who sees that fight knows there is not an excuse to explain it. It was just one guy too fast.. And these were two champions at 154 fighting what should have been a unification fight had the WBA not played games.

Ring magazine and KO had Hearns winning the fight by decision. Who was surprised? Hearns predicated a two round knockout and kept up the pressure. It was obvious early on that Duran could not deal with Hearns speed and jab.

Hearns didn't just catch Duran once. Look at the fight. He caught him numerous times over and over again and Duran took clean punches repeatedly, going to the wrong corner at the end of round one. No man can take those punches of Thomas Hearns for too long, and Duran did not.
Hearns never stayed in a division too long ,but yes dominated at 154 in 5 title fights, and dominated at welterweight until he fought Leonard. The same guy who outclassed and stopped Duran when Duran quit. As for Hearns, he had 2 losses in 11 years. Not too bad. I think you should look at my old posts. I am repeating what I already have said many times. Duran lost to Benitez soon after Leonard and then to Hagler and to Hearns. He beat one great in his career, and he did not stop him.
Hagler boxed Duran but he won. I am not sure Duran turned him into a boxer. Hagler fought a boxers fight and had to pour it on after and won easily. All Hagler had to do was increase his aggressiveness a little and he won easily, and still I hear some people say had Duran trained harder he would have won those other rounds. All excuses for Duran, yet the fact is he did not beat many ATG fighters. Only one.

I agree they were great although the fab 4 of the eighties as a whole is a little overated since everyone thinks they are better than any other group!! Leonard had the best boxing skill and Hearns the best right hand and Duran the most fierce and Hagler the best southpaw..... Too much bs!!!
