**** it, he's taken the fight knowing he has no chance. He'd have been far better served, bridging the gap between Euro and World levels instead of taking a fight in which he gets his head punched in and gets his name in the headlights for 2 weeks.

Best of luck to the lad, but (Similiar to Matthew Hatton/Alvarez) I dont see why we should all sit on a forum creaming oursleves due to the fact that a British Fighter agreed to fight for the chance to become the 'Champion of the world'?

I'd fight Martinez tomorrow knowing full well he'd punch my **** in. Doesnt make me a super hero, just means i'd take my one big shot. IMO Barker knows he isn't really on that level and he may not make it there if he was to work his way into contention. So he's taking it now. Completely fair enough however it's nothing thats gonna make me think different of him.

I hope he upsets the odds and cant wait for it tbh. There was a wee bit of needle on Maidana's part for the Khan fight, the whole Falklands thing is something that promoters or fighters have used and will continue to use. Would love to see him rock Martinez early on and make it interesting.

Its hard not to like Darren Barker and he gets absolute for doing this.

But jesus christ...its a seriously big ask and this job will be too big for him

Really hope he can pull it off but as mentioned it is a big ask, even though I think Martinez's last few wins flatter him a little (Pavlik having problems and Williams overated IMO) he is still a quality operator. Good luck Darren, genuinely hope you can do it. :good

 

Murray, Mckewan, Lee and Macklin.... If Barker were to grab the title just imagine the domestic/ Irish dust ups there there is to have, the latter 2 that I mentioned would be quite big especially Macklin.

 

Looking at this fight more, I think that completly writing Barker off is a mistake.

In reality, it's just two men, one ring, where anything can happen - it's not beyond comprehension that Darren could pull it off, even though he is a HUGE underdog and rightly so.

Martinez does get hugely overrated I feel, although he is a quality operator with bags of talent and the clear number one in the division - hopefully Darren just shows that he can hang with the big boys and make it somewhat competitive.

Quite right - it is also Barker's natural weight class and he does have genuinely rounded skills in his own right, unlike some of our previous 'Brits in the lion's den' efforts (eg. recently Matthew Hatton, who was very brave but fighting above his natural weight class just to get the shot). Barker is a genuinely talented natural middleweight, against a big name opponent who is getting on a little and whose last few fights flatter him a little. Martinez is rightly the overwhelming favourite, here - but there is a definite and defensible glimmer of hope for Barker.

Good luck to Barker, hes got a good jab and i think that can upset Martinez and getin into his rythm. Martinez has been knocked down before, not off power shots but balance shots so Barker putting him down isnt crazy talk
