Looks like Gavin finally has what we wanted and thats regular dates. Lets say he fights twice this season and then 3x before July. What would you like to see from him. October vs Diego Gabriel Scaves?? December vs Michael Jennings (British Title Eliminator) February vs Lee Purdy (British title) April vs Nate Campbell (WBO Inter - Continetal) July vs Yassine El Maachi (British title) I think thats 5 perfect fights, agaisnt different styles of fighters that still build his profile.
I see the lad flirting with 147 and giving reasons why he has not performed his best. Get down to 140 ffs!
I think you can draw a distinction between being at 147 because you can't be arsed getting down to 140, so you're a welter by default OR choosing welter as your desired weight class and conciously building a decent welter frame. There are millions of examples, but look at Ortiz fairly recently - the guy decided to move up from 140 to 147 and put in the training and built himself into the weight rather than just being at welter because he couldn't make light-welter. EDIT: If Gavin decides he wants to fight at welter, then he can concentrate on that being his weight class rather than being in limbo.
I think he'll struggle at 147 as he moves up in level. People could use the examples of pac or ortiz but they could really bang and carried their power up with them
I would rather see him fight Daws, Vassell or even O'Donnell than El Maachi. Following that they should get him in with a European fighter such as M'Baye. If he doesnt hold a belt of substance by February at the latest, baring injuries, then there is something seriously wrong.
I'm finishing off my article on him at the minute, i'll post it in here when I'm finished. But he is fighting Horta next
Id love to see him fight 5 times this season, one of the biggest problems with the olympian lot are that they have all only had around 12 fights in three years which is pretty poor at this stage of their careers, they shoukd be fight 7-8 times a year for there first 2-3 years in the sport and then slowing the schedule down as they fight for honours. I hope the promoters learn from this and let next years lot fight more regular on fre to view tv or at least sky sports until they are nearing world level at the least.
Why does Big Dunk always make threads on fighters who post here so they inturn respond to it. Aint the other 600 Gavin threads enough.
Indeed mate but the weight is not his optimum. 140 is. He has little power at 147 and that will really show. If he is serious then he needs to get down a weight. His skills are good but his power is not. Ortiz had power hence why he is able to move up. Also why is Ortiz being compared to Gavin? Gavin would do well to win a world title imho the way he is going! Other than being southpaw they have literally **** all in common. Ortiz is twice the fighter Gavin is and yet the ages are similar. His career will be a tale of anti-climax, unless he really pulls his finger out which I hope he does. Hate seeing boxers waste talent that is god given.
The only reason for the comparison is that you could see the difference in Ortiz physical when he moved up, hopefully a similar thing can be done with Gavin. I'm not trying to say Gavin is a carbon copy of Ortiz or anything, just that he is a recent example of a light welter moving up and the benefits showing. My main point being is that Gavin hasn't trained to be 147, he's ended up there because he struggles to make 140. If he trains to fight at 147 then it'll make all the difference.
I didn't mean to come across as pedantic then. I merely meant (as you are saying) that Ortiz is a naturally bigger person than Gavin hence why he moved up. He has the power to move up, Frankie doesn't. That is the problem with him moving up because he is totally reliant on out-boxing opponents rather than hurting them. It should be noted that Ortiz was offered a world title fight to move up, Frankie is doing so just because he doesn't like training at his weight.
