you mean the first time? No he wasn't. He was a big puncher, a guy George Foreman liked, but he was not more feared than Mike Tyson.

 

Crude, wild-swinging, plodding with a good chin... Big George probably saw his younger self in Sam Peter.

 

Sam Peter, in 2005, was a crucial win for Wlad. If he won, Wlad could fight for a belt and return to the scene after 2 bad years. If he lost, he would have been forgotten and doomed. It was a fight that would return his status or disappear it.

Peter was hyped as the next coming of Tyson or Ibeabuchi. The truth is that he was undefeated and solid just as any contender, and hit hard (it would seem he would explote Wlad's weaknesses).

Wlad didn't look spectacular on the fight, but he showed heart and won, almost stopping Peter at the end. Two of the knockdowns were illegal, imo. Peter lost his undefeated record and was probably ruined.

 

I dont think anyone ever p4p was feared as much as tyson.

 

Peter was hyped up at the time as the future of the heavyweights (never understood why even though I thought he was a good contender), but he wasn't a kind of guy to put a great deal of fear into opponents.

Tyson only got his "Bad man" rep after the Spinks fight. before that He was seen as an easy mark by most of the other HW's around at the time.

 

Good post, but Peter wasn't RUINED by the first loss to Wladimir......remember that he went on to OUTBOX a slick boxer(ToneyX2), edge a HUGE man Jameel McCline, and outbox and KTFO Oleg Maskaev whose skills and chin were at the time considered to be on a similar level to Golota.

I saw the Chambers fight a bit different that the final outcome, but Fast Eddie did what he had to do for the win, and although I gave the fight to Peter for effective agressiveness, the potshotting Chambers who ran most of the fight got the nod.

Peter then went the Arreola/Rahman route of beating Cclass fighters for another shot, but by this time he was ready to be offed by the first wordlbeater he faced, and it so happened to be Wlad due to Haye's blatant duckery.

Peter is not going to beat any of the bigger skilled fighters in the division anymore, but put him up against guys like Fury, Arreola, Potvetkin, or Boystov, or all 4 in a year, and I guaranteed he'd be 4-0 4KOs and in line to rematch Vitali for his WBC title or Wlad for the WBA unification.
