I have often thought it would make for a much more exciting sport. How would it change the sport if a move were made to use gloves similar in style to MMA gloves?
Change topic to "What if boxing switched back to MMA style gloves?" Lot of accepted practices and beliefs would be turned around and upside down.
Where do you see the advantage? There'd regularly be fingers and thumbs in eyes, and the reduced padding on the knuckles would result in more head damage.
Watch some highlights of sugar ray leonard vs wilfred benitez. Thats a good example of a highly technical boxing fight without using the gloves as "shields". Alot more parrying of the jab and pulling back from the hook. Bit of head movement and footwork to make the punches miss. There isnt much use of the gloves to cover. It was much more common back then and earlier not to cover up. They could make boxing gloves smaller yet have the same amount of padding over the knuckles with the attached thumb. It would be good from a realism standpoint. Secondly it takes alot more skill to defend without trying to block everything from a peek a boo guard. Some guys who are successful as boxers may no longer be with smaller gloves. If they where to use MMA style gloves or the jack dempsey era 5oz horse hair gloves people would end up dying and getting seriously ****ed up with heaps of broken bones and noses. Joe louis managed to punch peoples vertebra out of wack in their spine and take peoples teeth out even with 8oz hair. Rocky Marciano could seriously **** people up in the same gloves. He could fracture peoples arms just punching them
Smaller gloves yes but not fingerless. The gloves now were fine until they allowed gloves like winning and grant. They are just TOO big. Old school Reyes should be mandatory for all.
This.. DLH, Hatton, Cotto, and Margarito would be buried side by side. Imagine the boxing world without DLH? I think we best reconsider.
Yeh bring back more compact gloves I say. It will make boxing more realistic and for better crossover to MMA techniques. Just keep the padding over the knuckles the same, full finger coverage and attached thumb. They dont need to be so wide from the back of the hand which creates the shield. I saw a old picture of wlad klitschko using a very small set of gloves back in the day. They didnt look like a common brand.
Smaller gloves and a change of the rules would make boxing safer. MMA looks more dangerous but it isn't, it is more explosive. big gloves, mandatory 8 counts, taking a knee etc is all geared towards more damage. smaller gloves, no mandatory counts or knees would cause more ko's and reduce sustained punishment.
Less padding on boxing gloves would probably lead to earlier stoppages and therefore more exciting fights. But would guys get messed up more in a shorter time being hit with less padding? That's the big question.
Not really. The impact is very similar. Smaller gloves offers less of a shut up shop defence AND allows for strikers to be much more accurate. Fights would be shorter but only if a rules changed accompanied the glove change. Shorter fights should lead to less damage internally, probably externally also. I think more guys would be hitting the chin too, rather than just throwing wild **** shots at the head which is all too common now. In MMA you often see better punching because guys are turning their shots over and under, they are aiming for the chin, they aren't using a scoring approach as much but more a fight finishing approach.
This'll go down real well. I often use the glove argument to demonstrate just how different these two sports are.
