I have been a fightfan since Im 3 years old. Watching Ali, Norton, Lyle, Foreman, Sugar Ray, Marvelous, and most all the mid70s-mid80s greatest fighters from the throwrug in my grandpas basement in front of his projection TV almost every other weekend for a decade until he passed.
It was like a family reunion down there with my uncles and cousins sitting on the sectional sofa, recliners and rugs besides me. My mom, my aunts, and my girl cousins would come down with snacks only to be shushed for the slighest interruption:nono. Meanwhile, the boys and men would be praised for our passion during every exchange.:D

When Larry Holmes first broke into grandpas basement he was hated. It was Ronny Lyle or Jerry Cooney who was meant to take over for Ali, not some smack talking jabster from Philly, and my love for Holmes was met with aggravation as the Easton Assassin demolished any and every fighter who dared to enter the ring against him.
It was in 82/83 when he was potshotted to defeat by featherfist Mike Spinks that I finally understood that even the greatest could be beaten in one way or another. When he fell, KOd, by Mike Tyson, I thought the world was coming to an end, and boxing as I knew it was DEAD.

I hated Mike Tyson......despised his very existence, yet feared for his opponents and thought that it was only b/c Holmes was shot, or sick, or past it that Mike could even get into the ring with him. I was a NOSTALGIA fan.
Just like my DAD, whose favorite was Patterson, my grandpa who moved with the times, but said no fighter in history would ever be as good as the Rock, and I'm sure many young fans today can't consider another fighter ever being as good as Lewis or Wlad or Vitali. NOSTALGIA blinds us to fact, and we fail to see the TRUTH that each fighter can be beaten, and even the greatest can be stopped.

The following link is not for the chincheckers......so if your'e a chinchecker do not click, but if you want to see why it is that the greatness we are witnessing today will someday be considered for perhaps GOATness tommorrow, go ahead and click, enjoy, and keep an open mind, cuz the author will amaze you with his boxing statistical pedigree and his historical accuracy and unbiased intellect.

Haters are gonna hate this:-(, but the TRUTH will be brought into the open:good.

The article is too articulate and well thought out for ESB Klit haters. Good read though.

You know when every article is centered around Klitschko's that it's unbiased as advertised.

    :thumbsup

Some of us appreciate it though. Thx for posting.

I'd like to see an equally well researched article on Floyd Mayweather Jr, contrasting him to the likes of Hearns, Haggler, SRL, SRR, ODLH and other greats.

I have never read anything from this author, I just stumbled on it searching for Manny's reasoning for Lewis not facing Sanders but instead fighting Tyson.

As for a PBF contrast against the likes of Leonard, Hagler, Hearns etc.......I admit I'm a NOSTALGIA fan, and I don't think the ducking Mayweather would make a fight in the 80s since about all 5 of the top 135s-154s would smoke his ass with the quickness, and when he resorts to his sneaky elbowing on the inside, I wouldn't want to see how Marvelous would have reacted, or Duran, imagine that......May hitting Duran with those bows and forearms......Holy ****, the cops would be in the ring and Duran arrested for assault.

I think Sugar would step back, hit money with a 1000 straight shots, buckling the cheatser to his knees and then dropping him with a hard left hook. May wouldn't see what was hitting him, but then again.....I'm guilty of being a NOSTALGIA fan, so I'm extremely biased, especially towards Haggler, SRL, and Tommy Hearns, but hell......can ya blame me.:huh

I was a 10/11 y/o kid watching that fight, and I don't deny I was a Holmes nuthugger, so when the scores were announced I immediately began to cry, literally as what I saw was Holmes chasing the sneaky potshotter and nearly decapitating him each time he caught him. :deal

Who knows......maybe Holmes knows more about that than we think, especially after he was gifted with win over Witherspoon.:huh

Wow, leaving aside the ever so slightly biased nature of the article, really the standard of the writing is poor if the author is a native English speaker. Eg: In point one it should read deduce and not deduct. Ah well, another terrible blog...

Maybe it was a little sloppy, be he had good points and you can't argue with the numbers. They are what they are.

Ironic. I felt the exact same way watching a washed up Tyson fighting a slightly past prime Lennox.

Listening to everyone talk about what a great victory it was when real fight fans knew that Mike was washed up and obviously only fighting because of his debt to the IRS. It just pissed me off.
