I think Lee is just pretty physically weak naturally. It's unfortunate, but he's just like that. Can't see fighting at SMW helping him, I think middle > super middle at the top level is one of the bigger jumps in terms of size and strength. Guys like Froch and Kessler are ****ing massive, Bute also.
I agree with the detractors. He played it a touch safe. He wanted to avenge a loss. Maybe there were some demons to exorcise. BUT I saw all the moves that showed he has alot of class. Better combos, commitment to the body, a touch of self belief and it goes along way. Sturm doesn't leave anyone in awe. He hasn't improved other than he paces himself and knows his chin can be broken. He is a champion there for the taking. Chavez has improved alot under Roach but he is another guy who is yet to leave me in awe. Even Martinez is really good but beatable.
Be sure not to take it out of context. He has the teacher, he has the potential, he is getting the experience. He may never have that performance or those accomplishments but that is the goal. With the chance to beat Chavez, Sturm and co he could forge a nice career. He might not do it but he is no bum. Khan had the talent, now he has the guidance and he is getting the experience and he has come back brilliantly from a ko. McEwan, avenging the Vera loss and Lee could put something nice together. He has done enough to make sure I watch the next time. I just really hope he doesn't stay in gear 3 or he'll never break the upper echelons. I hope it was a case of him exorcising some demons and will up his game in each fight.
The issue for Lee is a lack of physical gifts. he's not very athletic, not especially co-ordinated and he's a little limited in terms of ring IQ. That will limit his potential, even with a great teacher.
I'm going to have to watch the fight again because I didn't really see any of that but I was hungover....all I could think at the time is that every time Lee fights, and regardless of how easily he wins, post fight he always looks like he's been gang raped.
long upright and rigid, quite amaturish. without upsetting the irish lads again,he is just decent, decent jab, left and punch, nothing special. and achill, get a ****ing grip man,he may have the teacher, but some people just can't be taught. when he steps up to world class,he will get beat,**** me its taking him long enough,i think they all know lees limits
I wanna' see Lee Vs Pirog. Considering Pirog looked ace the one time he was on HBO, and them needing another viable challenger for Martinez, I hope they pick it up, two big middles, both with awkward styles and punching power, both have questions to answer still.
Did you not hear? Pirog is a future ATG because he knocked out an unproven prospect. Lee would get murdered by this monster. In reality it's going to be an awkward fight where Lee gets clocked by counters, but dominates the distance well enough to scratch out a close decision.
Im still amazed how overrated Pirog is, not only in the general but by many on the Brit forum too. I actually had Jacobs beating him up till the stoppage, though you could tell Pirog was walking him down. His two challengers since arent next or near World level. Looks like him and Geale next year though.
Let's not go completely the other way on Pirog though. He's looked a good fighter and a pretty stylish fighter as well at times. Admittedly, I haven't watched this weekends fight yet (do have it) but that Gennedy is not complete shite, and whilst Pirog looked lacklustre before and Jacobs wasn't/isn't all that, Pirog looked a very good prospect before that and I think, take the belt away, he's right up there with the rest of the guys trying to break out of the pack of stellar prospects and to take one of many glaring holes that need to be filled in 'Contender' status at 160. Pirog is no spring chicken. Lee, Geale, Golovkin, any combination will do I guess. Although will someone make Golovkin-NJikam already, ho f'n long now?! Or were they scheduled to meet because both were going the WBA route but now the Kazahk (or whatever he is) has gone the green 'interim' way? Or am I wrong again? Either way, get that out of the way (Golovkin sparks him late in a good contest IMO) and have Golovkin fight the winner of Geale/Pirog or splatter Chavez Jrs head into the front row. FFS just give me Martinez Vs Genuine Top Level Middleweight again.
Even forgetting Martinez, just give me any decent level middleweights fighting each other. Lee, Macklin, Barker, Pirog, Golovkin, Geale, NDNJ, Sturm, could even add Proksa now. Between them there's so many good fights that could be made, but they hardly seem to be fighting each other.
Golovkin Vs Rubio is a good, guaranteed action fest! If only they could somehow get the winner in with Chavez Jr :think Lemiuex Vs Macklin :yep
The MWs are a little unproven and, to me, a little lacking in the sort of physical attributes that make me really go "HOLY ****ING ****!" That a career 154lber is top of the 160 division says either he's really something in this era (he is to some degree) or that the current division lacks depth (which it does to some degree). Macklin, Pirog, Golovkin and Lee all make for entertaining fights with Sergio. Golovkin has the physicality and style to pressure and punish Martinez, but he's not as crafty as the Argentinian. The only reason people don't get excited over these guys is that they're not that famous and they don't have the obvious traits that make people tune in.
That is a bit harsh and slightly untrue. He is talented. He isn't a super talent but he is co-ordinated, relatively agile, quite fast with decent pop. Add to that he is well schooled and has room for improvement. Lets wait and see what they do with him next. For me, I think its all about his mind - strategy, confidence etc
