So I usually go to another website to find out what fights are going on: Saturday, October 8 -- at Tijuana, Mexico Vvacant IBF super flyweight title: Raul Martinez vs. Rodrigo Guerrero Saturday, October 8 -- at Bacolod City, Philippines WBO light flyweight title: Donnie Nietes vs. Ramon Hirales Friday, October 14 -- at Buenos Aires, Argentina WBA World featherweight title: Jonathan Barros vs. Celestino Caballero So none of those are being aired, so nobody is going to talk about them, which is pretty sad because these are for world titles and I doubt these guys are picking their opponents, just getting through the old fashioned way, talent and rising up the ranking and making whatever bucks they get tossed their way. So how much do you follow boxing outside of the media favorites? We already know who they are so no need to reiterate. So does the media skew our perception on who are the best active boxers, or do we fans dictate who are the best boxers by following them? I think it is the former. One of the things I notice in other sports such as baseball and football are the statistical aspects. How many home runs, yards, etc. But boxing fans hardly discuss: championship record, avg rounds in championship fights, defensive %, accuracy%, etc. Instead we rely on our perception, so and so is more skilled, which why many times we get shocked when a perceived skilled style is beaten a perceived unskilled style (styles make fights). So do you as a boxing fans follow percentages? World title fights outside of media coverage? Do you know who all the champions are? I don't but I sure would like to. I would love to see more title fights on television and to discuss the other topics.
If it isn`t on HBO or Showtime I have no way of watching. Shitty foreign streams and Youtube the next day are simply not my cup of tea.
I watch all the fights... I even watch local fights! When 2 people are boxing in their backyards, I ask If I could come over and watch! I watch local guys sparring in gyms! I just dont care..
Martinez/Guerrero I was a helluva fight. One of those fights where, depending on what you favor, it could've been 8-4 in either direction (can't say that for any other fight really). I scored it 7-5 for Martinez if I remember correctly. I expect the same kind of fight, maybe a tad bit clearer for Martinez. Isn't Nietes fighting RAMON GARCIA? I expect Nietes to win this one, yes a new weight class, but he's been underrated for quite a while. Barros/Caballero... never saw the first fight. Heard Cab got jobbed... Barros isn't that great so with what I know, I'll pick Caballero comfortable but close UD. --- Youtube is the greatest... With it there is no excuse for self-proclaimed "boxing fans" not to familiarize themselves with fighters of the past. I follow pretty much the "top 15" or so guys in each division. My favorite division at the moment is def 118 (big Kameda, Vic, Donaire, Agbeko, and Yohnny fan). Nkosinathi Joyi is the man, and I expect big things out of him over the next 3 years. (recent statements from his camp make me wonder if he's moving up after the Katsunari re-match). I say those things so the next statement sounds strange... I follow NO British boxing. British boxing seems to live in its own world, and I care very little for it (though I do follow it more than some, I'd imagine). Like DeGale/Groves: couldn't care less.
Yea thanks to YouTube. I try to watch at least clips of everyone, and if it's for example someone mentioned on here that I haven't seen yet, I'll look them up on YouTube. My latest 'finds' even though I'm prob late is segura and nishioka
showtime, hbo, shobox, espn, telefutra (i've found that to be the best way to judge fights since i don't speak spanish), i miss versus, and foxsportsnet on sunday, miss tuesday night fights on espn
I attend shitty prizefighter, and I normally find a recording of or stream anything I missed, certain fights I will not watch though simply because I do not rate the fighter at all (Dimitrenko), or the fight has no value to me (Holyfield - Povetkin). I try to avoid watching fights from fighters who should have retired and are now journeyman punching bags.
