that is where i disagree. Sergio Mora or Peter Manfredo are more popular fighters based off what they did in "the contender". If boxing had a show with young prosects on a set night, say reality t.v. type. Amir Khan and Victor Ortiz could get crazy popular. FNF just doesn't create that type of fanbase for fighters. And I hate reality t.v. but look at how it affects the fighters who took place in the contender fights. (not their sucess in the ring but the fact that they got shots and are popular fighters, generally)
That's a great idea. Promoters need to look into that. Friday Night Fights has meaningful prospects fight on their cards at times.
FNF does. The problem is not many people pay much attention to FNF. If it was a reality series though. Now there is something that can make stars out of young fighters. Hell, look at what reality t.v. did for "New York", "flava flav", Paris Hilton and all the UFC fighters. Use reality t.v. and you'll see mega stars in boxing aside from Oscar and PBF.
I can't even imagine a card like that. Let alone it being free....I would pay $500 to order that off ppv. I agree that would most definitely put boxing on the stage (obviously) and boost massive interest, but we all know its impossible to accomplish
yeah, but I doubt a promoter wants to risk their prized prospects on a show like that. If its just some young fighter you have.. why not throw him in a show... but if you know you have a potential big star, I doubt you throw him in there. The promoters will build them up through the ranks nice and slow.
you have a point there. But that is our fault for caring about the 0 in a fighters record. If a prospect suffers a loss in this type of event i wouldn't care. In fact almost all of my favorite fighters have losses on their record. It happens when fighters fight the best
yeah, die hard boxing fans like our selfs might not care about perfect records. I know I don't.... but promoters are looking at the business side... better marketing, sponsors, and more money for pretty records.
but o we as fans realy want a fabricatd star mad by a television show, who gains imo unwarranted fame and a sense of entitlement (insert sergio mora here) over a young fighter that makes his way to the top through hard work. fighters don's necessarily have to be champions in orer to garab a following. hell i remembr the espn days, two of my favorite fighters who i never misse when they fought were terrence alli, and juan arroyo.
The problem with the sport isn't any one person, it's the fact that the sport isn't regulated. Unfortunalety you can be marketable and that can be as poweful as having a title. Even if a few changes could be made, like giving the bigger purse to the winner, defending each title twice a year at least, fighting not only in home towns but home countries also. Can you imagine how bad it would be if sports teams could just pick and choose who they wanted to play and where. There is enough money to go around to those who deserve it most, the fighters.
