Neither. I use a "heavy" pvc rope. Altus brand, under ten bucks Leather is too light so you can't get speed. Speed ropes usually have cheesy handles and are too easy. A thicker pvc rope has the right balance of speed, heft, and durability (if not on an abrasive surface).
Leather is slow as all get out. The best rope I've ever had was a plastic handle pvc one that cost me $5.
one of the heavier leather ones. Broke mine about three weeks ago (just snapped in the middle during a session) and bought a new everlast one, but its a little too light, the pitch is higher when I jump. I still get decent speed though. at 1:55 in this vid is with a leather rope (actually its all with a leather rope, but that part is particularly fast) , you can still get decent speed with them, you just have to MOVE YOUR ARMS. http://youtu.be/h-pIV0YeGjM
i have a speed rope and a leather rope. But when i use my leather rope my timing is always off and it gets really annoying. for me everything goes sooo much more smoothly when im using the speed rope.
I use a speed rope, but after watching that video I think I'll get a leather one. It makes that cool sound and is much better for showing off with! Just kidding man. Good work there. Much better than me. :thumbsup
Im not sure if it was a speed rope as the handles where normal, I could get some real speed going but I had to put some effort in to get a double under as the rope itself was rubber and had heft. Best rope I ever had. I think it was some cheesy brand like life gear or life something. Heavy rope (not handles)=speed without it being easy
