Whitaker v De La Hoya....what a robbery

DLH vs Whitaker is a tough fight to score -- can't be called a robbery really -- but it's clear DLH had a lot of momentum as a rising star (a moneymaker) going into the fight while Whitaker was a washed up cocaine-user going downhill fast.

Powers That Be (Powers That Want To Be Paid) gave Oscar the nudge.

At the very least it showed us that Whitaker in his prime was a considerably better fighter than ODH.

 

I had a past prime coke fuelled Pea beating him by a round (maybe two). It was hardly a robbery on a massive scale, though I've scored that fight a few times and always thought DLH was fortunate to get the nod nonetheless.

The Chavez fight was another matter altogether. Disgraceful verdict.

Pernell won the fight CLEARLY. The crowd and Lampley acted like every punch Fishnets threw that missed had landed flush. The crowd, the commentators and the judges were blinded by their desire for Fishnets to look good and win.:-(

 

The first fight I saw of DLH was against Mosley II and I was a huge fan of him.. that lasted maybe two years.
I think he lost against sweet pea, and I also think he lost against quartey:-(

DLH is the jermain taylor of a few years back

 

I scored it 113-113.

That's with that dumb WBC rule that took a point away from Whitaker.

 

Why don't you let go of PBF-Oscar and PBF-JLC I? They both lost get over it.:hi: :deal

 

Sweet Pea outlanded Oscar, dropped him and clowned him in that fight. Pea won by 2 rounds on my card.

 

You don't have to beat someone up in order to win a fight.
Now Whitaker did not beat DLH up, nor did DLh beat Pernell up.
It's quite a long time ago I watched this fight so hard to give an accurate opinion. But I think pernell was the one who deserved the fight. He clowned with DLH.

DlH received some great gifts during his career, however he was also nailed a few times himself (Trinidad, MosleyII).

Close fights are close fights, there will always be dispute about the outcome of such a fight. DLH isn't overrated at all because he is good and gave the best fighters in the world a tough fight. He is hell for anybody.

 

Don't forget Whitaker had 1 point deducted.

 

Whitaker really got screwed against Ramirez and Chavez.

I gave him 8 rounds in each of those fights.

I've gotta watch the first Rivera fight again to see if Whitaker got lucky there. I haven't seen that one in years.

I am just about the biggest Whitaker fan you will find...and the first Rivera fight was very close...a fight you could actually make an argument for Rivera in. I felt Pea pulled it out...but it was razor close.

 

It was a close fight...but DLH did edge out the victory being the aggressor for much of the fight and landing the much more telling and meaningful blows!

 

Wow, taking the race argument back to the 40's! I question who is racist if your suggesting that someone favours a boxers by their race and not their abilities!

 

Yeah, sweet Pea won. What's interesting is that a past his best Pernell Whitaker did just as good, if not better, against a prime DLH than a prime Floyd Mayweather did against a past prime DLH. Just something I thought about.
