Was Vargas green when he fought Trinidad?

I dont know how Vargas could be green when he fought Trinidad when he just beat Quartey, Wright, Marquez, Campus.

 

Was Trinidad too green to fight an unbeaten Campas?? remember the result? i mean if Vargas was the better man he would have won.. Trinidad had more power at the end he was going to win anyways..

 

Yea this "being too green" i guess its making excuses as the reason why Trinidad beat up Vargas. Vargas just beat wright, campus, marquez, quartey. <<How can he be green with that resume going in that fight vs tito?

 

The potential to be better was always there for Vargas. Whether he improved or not was still a toss up. Like I said, at the time of the fight (especially right after it) it seemed obvious that Vargas was probably too green. But looking back now I'm not sure how much better he would have been. I think what suffered the most was his legacy, not so much his prime talent although it would have probably been better if he never faced Trinidad. I just don't think he would've been significantly a better fighter, but he could have had a significantly better career.

 

He would have ended up in DLH's hands either way.

 

Not really. He just ran into a very good Trinidad who bounced him around. Credit to Vargas for putting up such a heroic display, but ultimatley, he was just outgunned.

 

Nope, not too green in the boxing sense, more like too macho for his own good. If he would have been cautious, he would have at least made the last bell. Instead he thought he could bang with the best at the time. Big mistake.

Basically, the first two knockdowns took a lot from him. If he could have avoided that, I think he at least makes it to a decision and possibly a win. Obviously, he adjusted and made a good showing for himself in the middle rounds. Too late, cause he chose to go in there carelessly and paid the price.

 

I agree. I completely remember Joppys look of disbelief after the fight. If i remember correctly he even said that it was like if he was getting hit by
cement or bricks.

Green? No.

But he wasn't as seasoned as he could've been. Still, the fights that leave you a lesser fighter can occur at any time, these things can happen. Meldrick Taylor was at the peak of his powers when he met Chavez first time out.

Vargas was a very good fighter, brave and skilled. He wasn't elite, but he had a good career and I really enjoyed watching him fight. I don't think there's any need to rue how things turned out or anything like that.

 

He was well blooded...would extra experience have helped him, as he would have been more savvy and possibly smarter defensively? Maybe.

But if anything his defense got worse as he got older.

Reasonably big fan of pre-Tito Vargas...gets a little undersold for mine.

 

I wonder would Vargas ever be ready for a Felix Trinidad,had he not fought him when he did.

Dont think Fernando had the boxing IQ to beat Felix.

 

I think it was probably the best time for him to fight Tito actually.

His performances against Quartey and Winky proved that, despite his age and relative inexperience, he was ready to take on the divisions best.

As has been pointed out, his lifestyle and the injuries he suffered, weren't conducive to a long career. He was a terrific fighter when he fought Tito - he just ran into someone better.

 

Actually, Vargas was a way ****ing smarter fighter than Tito...

Going into the 10th or 11th rounds, Vargas had managed to come back from teo 1st rd KDs, 4 low blows, and have an even fight with Tito....

Unfortunately the Boxer Puncher slowed considerably in the 11th and 12th rounds, one might say it was because of the 4 uppercuts to his groin, but he slowed down and paid dearly.

IMO, he could have beat Trinidad had he fought Tito like he did from rounds 2-10, and minus the low blows.

Vargas fell apart later in his career because of the two beatings from Tito and DLH, and his back problems.
