No, he boxed prior to his prison time, he found the boxing programme in prison intriguing and picked it all up again, but he did box before prison.

Just shy of the US olympic team (some say blatantly robbed out of a place). When amateur boxing was at a high.

Rahman started boxing at age 20 and became heavyweight champion of the world. Pretty incredible.

Chuancey Welliver was robbed of his own amatuer pedigree for particpating in toughman competition. Or something like that. He has basically learned his craft as a pro.

Although he is not recognized as a World Champion, he does hold titles on 4 continents, and is ranked inside the top 10 to both Klitschkos.

I got a few buddies from Philly who lack the amateur experience, but are going pro.

Why would anyone do that in this day and age?

The amateur programme enhances your chances at being active and gaining valuable experience without a damaging loss. Not only that, but it probably helps you gain financial benefit if you're cut for boxing.

Librado Andrades amateur record was 2-14. He may not be total elite, but still. Hes done pretty decent I must say ;)
