Its kind of departing from discussion but I guess it is relevant in some sense. Oscar had very puffy skin, it didn't take a whole lot of bombs to get him swelling around the eyes. Gonzalez fight, dominated, puffy left eye. Carr fight, dominated, puffy and cut left eye. Ike Quartey fight, put on a rather solid defensive performance, puffy left eye. Trinidad, barely hit, puffy face. Gatti, destruction pure and simple, cut. I remember him getting absolutely twatted against Quartey in the tenth, should have been knocked down and properly buzzed. Got right back to posing and parrying.
He says because he knew he had the fight in the bag, and really, he should have been correct. It's a damn shame though. Had he fought those last three rounds differently his entire legacy would have been 10x greater. Both DLH and Tito are ATG welterweights imho, competitive with any fighters before or since. Oscar running those last three rounds just left a bad taste in everyone's mouth and makes people not want to give him credit for what he accomplished. Couple that with the fact that there are a lot of scumbag boxing fans who just hate 'civilized' guys like ODLH and MAB and worship Duran and Pryor, and you have the perfect storm of ammunition for haters to hate.
It's difficult for some fans to accept that a guy who wears women's lingerie also had an atg chin, but he did.
ODLH was tough and had a good chin. whether he had a great chin or not will always be open for debate. and that proves one thing. He was a great defensive fighter hands down! Now that's something you can't say about every fighter that has a great chin.
Mosley landed a shot in their second fight that would have ko'd many top fighters. He has a great chin.
Definitely a great chin. Definitely top ten of his generation. Oscar's demeanor and looks didn't help him much. If he was ugly and mean looking, people would talk about him differently. And I don't buy the whole he is "fake" on camera crap. The man knew his job and did it well. We all do dumb **** when not at work, but only successful people separate work from play.
No. There have been tons of excellent chins like Oscar's. The top 10 is reserved for those freak chins that just seem inhuman, and there's plenty of those in boxing history as well.
He had a very good chin but I don't know about top ten, that's just another level. It gets difficult to compare chins when you take into account defense, skills, stamina, punishment taken, etc... For instance, compare someone like Mayweather or Hopkins to guys like Margarito, or Brewster. Floyd and Bernard haven't been stopped, but they also dont block punches with their face. Oscar had a solid defense and actually parried punches.
