I have heard that "Defend yourself at all times" by Victor Ortiz is a great read.

Go to the Training forum here on ESB and ask that same question; I am sure that you will get pointed in the right direction. :good

A waste of time trying to learn boxing from reading a book, get yourself down the gym.
If you don't have a boxing gym near you then there is some decent videos on youtube of people teaching the basics.

I think a book can teach you something. I remember reading a book as a youth and learning the basic stances, punches and strategies to deal with different styles. Also learned some training exercises. It is no way as good as going to a gym but it will provide a gentle introduction to the sport.
