Darcy had the same reach of Jess Willard I think, or just about. Les Darcy had a hell of a reach, for this reason I think he is a hard fight for anyone - he was aggressive, didnt mind fighting the inside, but was also very clever on his feet and could box if needed. On footage, he's a cross between Dempsey/Johnson.
Les Darcy's reach was variously quoted as being 71 to 74 inches. Which is very good for someone who is 5' 6" (Harry Greb's reach was 71, Johnny Wilsons was 72, Mike O'Dowds was 70 and he was a small MW, Jack Dillons was 72, Jeff Smith, another small MW was 71, Mike Gibbons was 72, etc etc.) But Jess Willard had an 83 inch reach. Darcy and Willard werent even close in terms reach.
Im afraid Fred's son Norm is gone alas but the gal in charge of the estate said a mouthful about Fulton vs Dempsey. Topic for another post! She has no recollection of Darcy but has access to Fred's scrapbook that she describes at about 4 foot high! You figure somewhere in there would be Fred's thoughts on the Darcy matter but who knows?
Nah, that was Bobby Fulton's son,,, not a bad footballer but not a pinch on his dad Bozo. --------------------- Same as the Mundine's,,,,, son only half as good as dad.
Would you admit a guy a foot shorter and half your weight knocked you cold with a single left hook....... this debate is tainted.
In the 1950s Fred Fulton would occasionally referee and judge fights up in Minnesota. Ive found one account of him being the guest of honor at smoker/stag party where he took his scrap book along and told stories of his fighting days.
I went through every single item that So and So has put here before with a far greater poster called 1942TheGreatest, on another well known forum, the debate is semi-famous for the dogged nature and great debate, and the FRIENDLY but very competitive way we went about it. There was no name calling required or nation slagging, IT WAS A DEBATE and we had nobody butting in who didn't know the subject well, I'm sure readers here would have enjoyed and be informed on many issues regarding Darcy and the only MW of the time who could be mentioned in the same breath. I think it may be a good idea to copy and paste some of that debate,,,, anyone is welcome to PM me and I will happily give you my identity there so you can follow it the thread,,,,,, My opponent there posted three times as many links as so and so, and we systematically debated every point, I admit it was frustrating at times trying not to repeat ourselves, and I admit that your Bobby Sinn would have done better than I,,,, he seems to have a cooler head, and he knows 99% of his stuff (nobodies perfect). ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- For those who think K*****on knows this era I think 1042TheGreatest could teach your pal a thing or two..... I await the PM's.
Looks like Fred did well for himself after his ring career. Owned and ran a resort back in MN Sounds like Billy Soose
Thanks for reminding us, who'd a thought Sugar Ray Robinson would be forgotten............. On his own thread no less....... Greb fanatics can do anything.
I think he had a couple of other business interests on the side as well. He seemed to live a very quiet life and his association with the sport was tenuous at best after his career.
Bobby Sinn seems to have a cooler head? Now that is words i didnt think i would here ever By the way Klompton, it surely has to be time to admit that Bobby Sinn and Gregluland are not the same person isnt it? There were early similarities but the last day or two has shown their different posting styles.
Boys it boils down to this. I would find it IMPOSSIBLE to believe Tex Rickard and Co could appear on the scene in a hick town the likes of Goshen NY in 1917 and not get a mention in the local paps. Im working on a check of them as we speak/type
