Larry Merchant "168 is a safe haven division for european fighters in boxing"

    Merchant said that during the manfredo-calz fight I believe....he sais something along the lines of that 168 was away from the threats at 160 and the big dogs at 175.






    When there is only one good fighter in the division..then that fighter should move up bottom line.

    Kessler is a nice fighter but he has no big fight expierience and will be out classed like Lacy was.

    Why hasnt Joe Cal not onced moved up to challenge anybody is beyond me.

    He should be at 175lbs looking for guys like Tarver, Johnson, Woods, Winky, Hopkins, Dawson, Jones Jr. not Manfredo, Bika and Kessler.

    The best ever at 168 was Roy Jones. He was an American fighter. He failed to take on top Europeans Nigel Benn, Chris Eubank, DM (****ed if I can spell that man's name) - was he hiding in America?

    Meantime, you have Calzaghe, clearly better than his 160 counterpart Pavlik, and #2 Kessler, clearly better than his 160 counterpart, Taylor. So it's just an old man's ramblings really. Don't understand it at all.

    agreed; his commentary stinks...always negative and off the mark. and he talks so freakin' slow, reducing time for others to chime in.:-( is he STILL w/ hbo???lose that old man...Atlas is the BEST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    I think Floyd couldve stayed at 130-135 and dominated easily..but he moved up and challenged hiself.

    Larry Merchant said that? America had their great black hope at 168 in Lacy and their great Mexican hope in Andrade and look what happened to them, both of them had undefeated records in the US and as soon as they stepped out they were easily destroyed by Euro's.

    :lol: Tell me this is a joke. Lacy was never any type of hope in America. Jermaine Taylor was seen as the star of that olympic team. If Lacy was such a big hope in America, how come he was fighting on the second rate Showtime network instead of HBO like Taylor? Face it, no one gives a **** about SMW's. Merchant has a point, it is a safe haven for Euro fighters. How many American stars have been career SMW's?

    Calzaghe ummm.... became the first fighter to win every title in that weight class, the first ever Ring champion at 168. The holder of the record for an indoor boxing event (the weight was 168).

    i.e. Joe Calzaghe has defined a division in desperate need of defining.
