Cool article. I have a contemporary one from the twenties that mentions this quote as well. Ill see if I can dig it up.

Dave Smith's defence there reminds me of Fitzsimmons,....... Didn't Smith beat Papke ??... i know no details of it. Smith fought some big names. I know he suffered some heavy KO's.. Apparently, McGoorty knocked him for six. (cricket,..... over the fence,... 6 runs)/

Plans were being made to take Richards to America, they didnt seem to come to fruition.

I think I read it in the contemporary one as well...But I can't find it . To be honest I believed it more than this one. But it looks like I have this one only. Talk of mishaps.:patsch

Greguland, if I had the Gibbons fight I will give it you for free. I dont have it now.:patsch

HENNEBERRY was better than the rugged tough Zivic, and Fred was a proper middle, and just like the rest of his International peers was fit for any American middles...

It's a shame travel was much harder and more exspensive then as there were literally dozens upon dozens of Great International showdowns that could have transpired to determine the real Champions in each division.

still it was a helluva lot more competitive and truer to greatness than what were left with today!

I think a bloke like Fred being known only to BIG fans of the sport........ and rarely mentioned outside OZ....... I think if you want to see how much talent was in the world.... Henneberry proves it....... He was even better at foul tactics than Fritzie.

darcy was a lot bigger than sugar, but with far less experience. even so i think the size is too much, sugar likely can't do it outside(reach) or inside(weight) so it would take a masterclass to stay in range and win on points, ko possible though, darcy's defence wasn't his best attribute imo.
would rather see darcy v greb, rjj or tunney

It's called "trolling" Burt, my friend. You know, someone who throws out a ridiculous comment to see what kind of reaction he can get.

The pictures below look like something out of a 1940s film noir. They are actually pictures of Pittsburgh in the AFTERNOON. Yup, it wasn't called the "Smoky City" for nothing. Street lights were often on during the daytime to cut through the inky blackness of the Pittsburgh air.

Fighters like Harry Greb, Frank Klaus, Billy Conn, etc used to RUN and TRAIN in these conditions. Eddie Wimler used to work 12 grueling hours in a coal mine, wipe off the coal dust, then put on his gear and go fight guys like Johnny Ray and Patsy Brannigan night after night.

I doubt Darcy could even dream of fighting under such conditions.

Yeah, them Americans definitely be pampered....
