Can anybody please offer me any advice on careers in the sport out of the ring. I would love to work within the sport and i just dont know where to start. I have contacted some promoters and ex profesionals for any help they can give me. Working with a promotional outfit would be amazing and anything like work experience for a few weeks would be great. The problem is i dont know how you go about getting jobs in the business. I have looked around but cant find anything. Any help anyone can offer will be fantastic. Thanks guys
Hmmmmm, tough one really mate. If you really wanna get going, speaking to local promoters would be a better option. Offer them a service or skill you have.
It depends on what you want to do. getting into promoting is real hard but you can always apply for a promoters license and start real small by getting to know the local gyms and trainers in your area and putting small shows on for maybes newly turned pros or lowly ranked pros. You then will have to work your way up which would take a lot of time and hard work and you wouldn't necessarily make it. To be a trainer/coach you can do your badges at many gyms around the country, its a lot easier to get into if you have had boxing experience but by no means necessary. It's best to get some experience at an amateur gym under the guidance of other coaches and again work your way up. For jobs in the back of promotions your probably going to have to be educated or have experience in certain roles such as marketing/finance etc etc and probably best to get in contact with promoters and see where you can start. It may be a case of doing internships etc. Media wise you can always find websites to write for and then when you have a portfolio go round magazines or other media sources and see if you can get a job. or you can do what I did and start your own magazine. Its achievable but trust me it is extremely hard and sometimes you feel like banging your head of a wall but once you start to turn things in your favour then its definitely worth it.
Hi Mate, I've been having exactly the same problem. I was fortunate enough to be involved with a WBC event in the UK in 2010 which gave me some great contacts and I have been involved with a few shows since then but if you are lookin to make money in this game then it is dam near impossible unless you have some to invest. Keep sending CV's to the major promoters in case of an opening. I try to treat it now as a hobby helping out with the occasional show because i just havnt been able to make it financially viable as a job. Sounds a bit depressing but hope my experience helps you in some way. Cheers
