BINGO ChrisP!!! This was the essense of a post I made yesterday in which I expressed the belief that the tko should stand and let Hopkins go the way of other previous tko losers like marcel Cerdan, Sonny Liston, Rene Jacquot, John Mugabi, etc., all who covered themselves in glory compared to this charlatan/faker Hopkins and his disgraceful performance last Saturday night.

Thats not at all what he said. It was right there, did you even watch it? The doctor was standing over him asking if he could continue and he said "Yes, one handed" then both the dr. and ref. stopped the fight. Period.

To say he should have a TKO against him to basically set an example (which is the essence of Chris and Red Cobras point) is pretty troubling).

And to answer your point about Cerdan, yes, because he got up. Its very plain and there is precident as well. If a fighter decides he can continue and isnt stopped from doing so by an official than the fight can continue however, the fighter cant then decide later if hes doing poorly to opt out of the fight at a later time. Then it would be a TKO. Thats not what happened here. Hopkins was clearly fouled (whether intentional or not) he was asked if he could continue with the injury sustained from the foul and said he would one handed if he had to. The officials stopped it. Clear NC. Period.

If the blow was a foul blow, shouldnt it be a DQ win?

The danger to me is that it seems in the hands of the "victimized" fighter to decide whether to have the fight stopped or not.

Stay on the floor to hope for a DQ win/NC. Maybe a bad example, but think Abraham vs Dirrel. Would Abraham have been DQ'd had Dirrel taken the punch? Fighters often throw in an extra punch for good measure when the other guy is on the floor. Foreman did it all the time. All they have to do is pretend being KO'd (which is the easiest thing in the world) and get that DQ win. There's also plenty of instances when one guy stops doing anything and tries the referee to take points (Hopkins is the first that comes to mind).

Everything Hopkins says or does appears fake to me. If any other boxer would've said "With one hand, yes" then I might have believed it, but Hopkins is smart and he's formulating it such that it appears he wants to continue, but knows the doctors will stop the fight upon hearing that. Same with Rahman vs Toney. Hopkins brought it onto himself by always faking ****.

Watch 7:11, that's what a real injury looks like, none of the over-selling, fake expressions and screaming. Also notice he actually .... believe it or not........ tries to get up.

Does anyone honestly believe Cerdan vs Lamotta would've been a NC if Cerdan stayed on the canvas?

Again, I hope boxing doesn't follow the trend that football has taken during the last decade..

This all presupposes that you can take one look at a fighter and determine his level of pain and the severity of his injury. I remember Ferdie Pacheco talking after the McLellan-Benn fight about he though Mclellan was basically a quiter and how he wasnt hurt that bad. Now, this is a professional fight doctor with years of experience with some of the biggest fighters in history and hes basing his opinion strictly on what he sees and he was completely wrong. In fact he was about as wrong as it gets. Thats why we dont go labeling people fakers, or ruling DQs and TKOs based solely on opinion. It is in fact why there is a criteria for a NC/ND. Because cooler heads understand that there is a grey area.

If the ref had ruled the fight a no contest there would have not been one word said that it should have been a TKO. People would have just said it was a no contest and moved on.

I think a lot of people are letting their preconceptions of Hopkins try to justify the obvious wrong call.

Yeah that's what Hopkins said, but his body language said he was willing to sit on that canvas for the time it took for the injury to heal before he'd go on fighting one-handed.

Look I'm sure if this wasn't Hopkins, most people would be fine with it being ruled a NC, but this is poetic justice for him given his faking, manipulating and dirty fighting throughout his career.

Should have happened much earlier - around the time of Hopkins-Allen 1 imo.

Poetic justice is not justice and has no place in boxing.

Once again, your entire argument is based on supposition. "Yes he was saying he would fight on but his body language was saying he would stay down..." Then give him the opportunity! Tell him its a TKO if he quits (which it still shouldnt have been)! But once you take that out of his hands youve tied your own hands and its fairly clear how this should be ruled. The thing is Im not saying Dawson should be DQd (which he easily could have been). Im saying that both fighters assume some of the blame, its unfortunate, no, it downright sucks, but the fight ended and neither fighter should have a win or loss because of it. Nor should a championship change hands in such a rididculous manner. I mean come on, a TKO based on a body slam? WTF!!!

Does anyone think that, if the roles were reversed, that if Dawson was the one who took the fall and injured himself, that the pro-Hopkins types wouldn't be soiling their britches with glee over a tko for their man?

I wouldnt. It still wouldnt be an incorrect call and would set an awful precident.

Yes it does, we just saw it. :good

The ref should have told him he's going to be TKO'ed if he can't continue, but in any case, he asked him about 5 times whether he could continue and only at the very last did Hopkins say yeah with one arm, but look at my shoulder, and started writhing again. He simply wasn't going to continue. Call that a supposition if you will, I also suppose the sun the is going to rise tomorrow.

It shouldn't have been a TKO if we're looking at this as an isolated incident. Given a panoramic view of Hopkins' career, I'm happy for the decision to stand.

No it doesnt. Its sad that you think so and based on your comments its obvious you are willing to throw the rule book out the window when it benefits your fighter or goes against a fighter you dont like.

It is supposition on your part but thats beside the point, even had he said flatly that he would not continue it STILL should have been NC/ND. Period.

You dont judge fights based on what happened in fights previously. Thats absolutely ridiculous and lends itself to bias for or against at the very least. Im constantly amazed sometimes that a professed fan of the sport can turn a blind eye to **** like this that has a long term negative impact simply for personal gratification (i.e. paying back Hopkins for whatever it is hes done to you). **** it, if thats the case dont ***** and moan about corruption, Don King, Bob Arum, Steroids scandals. Hey as long as your favorite fighter is on Steroids who cares, so long as hes winning right? Might as well wear loaded gloves also and buy the judges and the referee, right? Woohoo! This COMPETITION at its best isnt it? :-(

Hey Klompton, when I see you picketing to have Nard declared a TKO loser against Calzaghe, a TKO loser for faking against Allen, and the Winky Wright fight gets declared a NC because Bernard butted Wright and caused a fight changing injury, I'll take what you say seriously.

Till then, I'll sleep easy at night with this 'injustice'.
