According to Yvon Michel, president of GYM, the WBC is preparing to give the belt to Bernard Hopkins after his controversial defeat against Chad Dawson Saturday night in Los Angeles.

Hopkins lost his fight against Dawson after the referee Pat Russell had determined that Dawson was not at fault by sending the veteran Philadelphia boxer to the mat in the second round.

Hopkins said he might announce his retirement following a shoulder injury and the decision that cost him his title of champion of the WBC light heavyweight Saturday.


The result of the fight has attracted several reactions and Jean Pascal, the former holder of that belt, believed that the WBC would reverse the decision and that Hopkins and regain the title.

THE RING Magazine light heavyweight belt will not change hands pending the California State Athletic Commission’s ruling on a protest filed on behalf of Bernard Hopkins.
Chad Dawson was awarded a second-round TKO victory over Hopkins after THE RING and WBC titleholder was sent to the canvas by a shoulder shove and dislocated a joint in his left shoulder Saturday night in Los Angeles.
The shove was not ruled a foul by referee Pat Russell, who declared Dawson the winner because Hopkins couldn't continue.
Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer, who represents Hopkins, said he plans to file an appeal with the commission. He believes the shove was an obvious foul and that the fight should’ve been declared a no-contest.
George Dodd, executive officer of the commission, said the appeal will be heard at its next meeting, on Dec. 13 in Los Angeles.

 

Excellent decision, my faith is restored

 

This makes sense. Although I've been highly critical of Hopkins' behavior and think the TKO is fait accompli to some extent, it doesn't seem right for the belts to change hands in that fashion.

But it also doesn't make Hopkins/Dawson II any more palatable. Hopefully, Bernard will use this opportunity to step into retirement. He doesn't have any big fights on the horizon and is sullying his reputation far too frequently these days.

The last thing we need is another guy slipping into Roy Jones territory.

i would have to agree with the WBC. that was a clear foul by dawson. a rematch should be ordered
