Ive noticed that the "sssss"and also the "pssss"noise that many quick fighters make when they punch may actually give the impression that those punches are quicker.Examples of fighters who make the "psss"or "ssss"sound when punching are Floyd Mayweather,Roy Jones, and to a lesser extent Andre Ward,Chad Dawson, and Andre Dirrell.Sometimes when Im waching fights I will turn the sound off,and these shots do actually look slower!!Has anyone else noticed this?I myself love to make these whizzing sounds when I throw punches, but when I get tired I tend to just grunt. For anyone else who actually does box, what noise do you like to make when you punch?
When you exhale, you can punch harder and faster. If you want a faster punch, then do a quick hiss, or shhhh. If you want an powerful punch then, do an explosive breath or even yell like Ricky Hatton
It's used in the amateurs a lot. It makes judges pay more attention to the punch, whether it lands or not. It almost fools you into thinking a punch connected.
Yeah, it's just to make people pay attention, it makes the vocal boxer look more active with all the noise they make and puts your attention on them, leaving you with the impression they gave more output. Old school tactic that made it into the pro's for some reason.
To each his own. Salvador Sanchez was quiet for the most part and even tho he wasnt the strongest, fastest, or hardest puncher out there I think by not making the exhaling noticeable your not giving your opponent the slightest chance of knowing a punch is coming. Then you have the complete opposite in Juan Diaz with "Sas, Sas!" which is the spanish equivelent for "Pow, pow!" But Baby Bull had.the fast hands to back it up plus he rained punches in bunches on you. Whatever works for you. Also agree it is done alot in the ams and tends to get carried over to the pros.
when Pac punches the mitts with Freddie he goes of "Boom Pak Pak Boom" or "ta ta ta ta ta ta ta ta" the punches were actually faster than his grunts.
.......... This can't be life. The quick exhale/grunt/whatever tightens your ab muscles, in case a counter is sent to your body. Thats what I always assumed that noise was for. Not for 'faster punches'.
yes the hissing does make you punch faster. If you do it when you're slipping punches, it'll make you move quicker also.
Where do you think Zab Judah got his speed from? His father in the corner ingrained BOOM BOOM ZIP ZIP ZAPPITY ZAP BOOM BOOM! into his speed. Its ungodly.
